Greetings, I have recently purchased a 4wd Tercel, finding this forum steered me in that direction. It's an '86 SR5 w/ 106K(miles) has been repainted. Needs some mech. smoothing out. Was a Brit's car, thus the personalized tag. I am now worried about high altitude/cold weather performance (w/carb.) as I plan to take it to the Mountains in the 7-9000' range- but only at sea level now.
I know there is much to search here,, but any suggestions?- needs shocks, struts, CVs (recs?) What the best tire size to use on the street&snow, but maybe get a hair more ground clearance?

Figured I'd take the car's tag, but my name is Jon.

Oh, I so want to get mine resprayed now.
Really, really, really want to get it resprayed...

I'm running 185/75 R14 tyres at the moment on non-Tercel rims without too many problems.
I've just got to remember that the speedo is about 10% out, therefore if it says 60kmh, I'm doing 66...

CVs on these are real easy, if you can get a hold of a new/reconditioned one. There's a .pdf manual somewhere on the main site that Toyota put out for just your model car, I think. It works for all our Tercels, though. And there's a fair few writeups where people have done their own work...

If you really want, there's even how to install performance carbs, such as Webers and the like about somewhere...

Thanks, I couldn't resist as it had low miles and pretty clean body. was $1K, I found another '83 for $400 that actually ran smoother but was too moldy and surface rusted. I drive a 2wd E350 van mostly so I was looking for the lightest 4wd I could find (for Sierra snow, variety and mpg). Considered a Tracker/Sidekick/Samurai; can find nice clean late models for cheap- also Subies and toyo all-tracs(only found automatics) but this is a throwback to the old Corollas I used to drive long ago- and lighter/cooler in a strange way.
I'm in Half Moon Bay but the car came from Hollywood. A guy I know picked it up in LA and drove it north, sold it to me.

Hello, does anyone here drive theirs to high altitude? Does the fuel mix hang in there? DO you need to mess with carb jetting?

I haven't yet, but there is a discussion about that somewhere.....as you say...supposed to be a gizmo for that that leans out the carb and advances the timing?

Best bet is probably to do the timing advance thing now to gain more power and maybe the cam advance if it works out...so when you hit those 12,000' passes you still have maybe the sealevel OEM power left.

I might be gaining power from the heated fuel but I haven't tested that yet.

We regularly drive ours through some pretty high passes here in BC, and I've never found our wagon to run any worse.

Holy sh*t !!!!!!! What a beautiful looking car. I'm drooling.

I've had my Tercel up to elevations over 9000' with no problem. It has the High Altitude Compensation System. It came stock in the US Federal models in 1986 but not the California models. That's the same for 1985 year also. In 1983 it was an option only on the US Federal models.

What about you overseas owners? Was anything like that available in your cars? My manuals don't show it available in Canada either.

Wil see when I go to the mountains. I was concerned because I have the CA model without the altitude compensator I believe.

You could always pick one up at a junk yard...well maybe not in Calif. Maybe one of us outside Calif could find one for you. If you want to go through the dealer the part number for the kit is 04215-15020
