Crankshaft pulley question.

Post by judohawk »

I have everything ready to go to put back into time. But when I pulled the pulley off the inner part that holds the accessory belt came apart. Like it was held on with some kind of sealant. Anyway it's now two pieces. I take it I'll have to buy a new pulley huh?

Also another question about the timing. On the cylinder head you have 3 marks. The inner one, and two outer ones. Which one do we use to put it back in time? I also think I found the mark on the oil pump. I found a bigger bulge and a little tiny bump about 2 o'clock.

There should be four bolts that held it together, so you shouldn't need a new one.

The camshaft pulley has a hole in it that you line up with a notch on the cylinder head right above the camshaft and there should be a mark on the block for the notch in the crank shaft pulley to line up to as well. Check the FSM link at the top of the page for the exact details on it.

Well it could a pulley that's been fitted on over the years but if I look at the ones I got they are one piece and as the mark goes I only got one too. There should be a white one for the timing light to pick up if you lost the white might be good to mark it back (liquid paper works kind of good) and it should the first that the Zero mark will encounter turning clockwise. The others are for advance timing purposes.

Note if the pulley separates in two pulley maybe normal it worked didn't, but if it makes two half moon you definitly need a new one.

must have fell apart
probably oil did it

Ok this is what I mean. I see the bolts in the middle but there's no way they'd hold on the outer ring thing. I'm gonna need a new pulley I guess.

i'll have to take a look at one a little closer to see what happened
probably rust?

Any of the rust on it doesn't seem to have affected it structurally. All that happened was I needed a bar to get the pulley loose and when I did that I noticed the inner part moved. Once I got it off I examined it. I didn't think rubber could just turn into a goo like that, or atleast all of it. It seriously looks like someone ran into the same problem before and just used a strong sealant to hold it together.

Im just not sure what to do. I love this car, but before I can do anything more to it I need to get it in time so I can start it again. I'm worried the head gasket might be toast too. I was driving it home from work one day and the water pump bearing almost seized up. The temp part of the gauge is so hard to see at night too. :( I don't have coolant in the oil and it's not burning coolant but until I can bleed it and test out my new water pump I can't tell if there's gases going into the coolant.

Long story I know lol.

sounds like the rubber layer in the front harmonic balancer gave up, sometimes this happens when oil or solvent gets on it for too long. If the rubber has turned to goo, likely some kind of solvent got on it, brake fluid or something similar. Not likely you can glue it back together, and not worth the effort, the front pulleys/harmonic balancer is easy to find.

These pulleys are common to both 3a, 3ac and 4ac engines from both similar years corolla and TErcels, should be easy to find in a wrecking yard. I might have a good spare one I can sell you cheap, how about $25 plus shipping? PM me with your shipping address.

The rubber strip in the weighted front pulley dampens the harmonics of the crank, reduces the stress on it and makes it last longer, you need to have that thing functioning properly. Occasionally some will weld the pulley back together to get the car running again, I do not recommend it, cracked cranks could result.

good luck.
