I sent this link to my insurance agent, asking for a modest discount for the Mighty Tercel and the '88 Dodge/Mitsu p'up.
His answer:
"Tom - it is a great idea! But when I sent it to the Home Office, its reply was: 'WHO would want to steal these cars?' Sorry.
Rob "
My reply:
"Thanks, Rob, but I've been looking at that hot "Flo" in the Progressive Insurance TV ads, and I am positive she winked at me, so... And I always did have a thing for women in white uniforms..."

Re: Thick Thift Thwarts Thief
if they think nobody would steal it than you are already paying their lowest rate. And for a car this old that is not particularly valuable (compared to newer cars) than carrying anything other than liability could be a waste of money, likely the insurance company would try and cheat you on the real value anyway.
the stick shift incompetence will only get worse as time goes on, few new cars even have that option anymore. I wonder for example what young children born recently will make of say an MG midget by the time they are 20 year old. just think, no computer, on plastic, no electronics to speak of, no internet up links or GPS, and an AM radio.

Re: Thick Thift Thwarts Thief
I talked with my insurance company and asked them what I could do to establish the correct value on my vehicle so as to avoid a major hassel claim if something happened in the future (God forbid).
They told me that i could get it assessed by a licensed car guy (like the ones who check out the hod rods and such), and that whatever the price-tag he put on it said, would stick as a semi-permanent value.
I thought i would show him some of the latest sales that have been made like the 10,000 ebay car; as well as all of the receipts that i have on it.
Not sure of the total cost of the whole thing but anything under a couple hundred might save me big bucks in the future.
I don't know what do you guys think?

before you pay for that service I would get in writing from my insurance agency that they would accept that as the value. Consider that the job of the adjuster is to minimize the payout of the insurance company, so they have no obligation to honor a third party appraisal if they think it will save them money to ignore it.
i wanted to do a total rebuild of an old Volvo 122s when I was in collage and asked my insurance agent that exact question, and he said they would not take my word for is value based on the receipts, and only specialty insurance companies would honor that, and they are much more costly than State Farm. unlike classics and collectable cars where there are published values based on auctions and active collectors, taking a routine old car and fixing it up has no objective way to value it. Just because you spent $10,000 on a project car does not mean it is worth that much. Recently in the news was a water front home in San Diego that the contractor spent $35 million building (and going bankrupt over), and it just sold for $15 million. That is the market price, and hence its value. It was an ugly house in my opinion, but that was the risk he took in using a big name architect who was more interested in being "creative" rather than designing something that would appeal to buyers.

Funny that the female Audi owner was able to drive a stick and the male thief wasn't. Having a 5 speed is an effective theft deterrent as any cop will tell you. Good thing for the decent peeps that common criminals remain dummm generation after generation.
Tom you could always get an agreed value policy like this guy: http://www.wfaa.com/news/texas-news/134834663.html
Funny you mention Progressive. They write both of my cars' liability for $40/month.

It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.
