Aubrey's '85 4WD Tercel

Due in no small part to the encouragement of many fine members of this online community - especially Petros and Dlb, I rescued this Tercel from a weed patch and combined it with an '83 I found on Craigslist to make an awesome first car. It has just under 120,000 miles, an automatic, a fine paint job, a great interior, very little rust, functional AC, a roof rack, and a respectable custom audio system.

So far I have borrowed the engine (but not most of the carburetor or the IIA), the radiator, the AC pump, the sway bar, the inclinometer, and the plaid blue and white seats from the '83. Everything else is stock, except for the 185x70R14 snow tires I just installed and a couple other modifications I have done such as removing and repainting the trim and bumpers with rubberized truck bed liner (which worked splendidly), and building a custom iPhone mount / charging / audio interface system (which is, in my humble opinion, way cooler than all the expensive gadgets they build into new cars these days :)).

The larger 14" wheels gave this car around 1.5" of extra ground clearance, a more sporty appearance, a speedometer that is now accurate instead of being way too slow, better freeway cruising, and still just barely enough torque to get around.

It is possible to fit 4 6x8 speakers driven by a 200 watt amp with a preamp / 4 channel equalizer into a Tercel without sacrificing style, stereo imaging, or one inch or cargo capacity. I don't quite have the front two 6X8s fully enclosed yet, but you can see how I mounted the rear ones in the pictures below.

I look forward to many future adventures and additions - stay tuned for updates!

nice work aubrey, it looks great! i love seeing another one cared for and preserved so well. the rear speaker covers look REALLY slick, and i'm thrilled to see someone else use the bed liner on the hood.

thanks very much for the props, i'm glad to help where i can. this really is a great forum, free of the usual BS i find on most others. huzzah for all of us!

VERY Nice! VERY sanitary speaker installation!
I like the yellow color - I don't think I've seen that before.

Yep, we're neighbors by internet standards!
I live halfway between Coeur d' Alane and Sandpoint on Highway 95, so chances are that there's only an hour or so drive between us. I plan on living in the area for quite a few years to come, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if we meet each other at some point. You'll know me by the rainbow Apple sticker on the back window - I love how it fits in with the Tercel's styling as well as era.

I was a bit surprised that the Tercel doesn't have an ATF filter. Does anyone install an external filter in the radiator loop, or is it really not needed?

It's true Arch, I love keeping records! Best example - NEVER talk to any corporate agent on the phone without recording their name and a summary of the call. I can't begin to estimate how many hours of my life has been saved by that one rule alone...

Dlb; The hood bedliner strip came out so nice that I am planning to coat the lower half of the doors (flush with the top of the bumpers) next summer. I love both how it looks, and how durable it is! I was also thinking about stealing the extra wide rub strips of my SR5 parts car, they are definitley more sporty than the thin DLX ones...

That first picture the Tercel with snow , is the coolest picture you ever took , It look so perfect that it should be on the front cover of the "4X4 magazine".

Tercel has now been with me for just over 5,000 miles - including a recent road trip from Idaho to northern California, exploring every facet of the Oregon coast on the way back home. I have tuned up just about everything on it, and receive compliments on how great it looks all the time. Love this car! Only issue I had on the 2,000 mile trip was running the battery completely dead by listening to Celtic music for hours on end through the middle of Oregon. I also managed to melt the factory 12volt accessory wiring with a custom electric kettle that I used to brew tea as I drove along, but I rewired a couple extra 12volt ports off my heavy duty amplifier lead and I can now brew tea and run a 400watt inverter simultaneously! You'd think the alternator could keep up with my sound system at 65 miles an hour, but apparently not :)

I couldn't be happier with the RAM based iPhone docking system within fingertip reach of the steering wheel. I sit down, slip my phone in, and have instant access to unbelievably good turn-by-turn navigation and 95% of all the music that has ever been commercially published, streamed to my car over the internet.

I bought one of those widescreen Asus Transformer tablet computers for $250, and made a custom case that firmly affixes it to my rearview mirror. Pop a 64gb microsd card into it loaded with movies, connect the amplifier's aux in line, bring some ice cream, wait for the sun to go down, and you have the best 4 person car theater ever...

great pictures. You should turn those pictures into a travel narrative.

What is an inclometer doing in an '85 Tercel?

'92 Mazda MPV 4wd (wife's daily driver)

Your travel narratives are so exciting, I was afraid that mine would be dull reading indeed by comparison. I'll have to wait 'till disaster strikes on a future road trip before sharing all the details of it.
I stole the inclinometer from my donor '83 Tercel. Totally worth it!

aubrey, your car looks awesome. how'd you keep it so clean on the trip??

great call on the oregon coast/northern cali trip too. my wife and i have done the oregon coast a few times and had planned to do it again this summer and see the redwoods but we had to change our holiday plans. next year, definitely. there are so many wonderful, non-touristy jewels along and just off of that highway. what were some of your faves?

did you paint the inclinometer cover black? i thought they only came in grey and brown since tercels didn't come with black interiors until '87. i could be wrong though.

Yep, repainted the inclinometer cover before installing.

The coolest beach we found was at the outlet of Pistol river, about 15 miles N of Brookings. Thousands of starfish can be found there at certain times of the year.
Best place to eat anywhere on the coast is the Samoa cookhouse near Eureka.
Ferndale was fun - with elegant Victorian houses, a really cool ironworking shop, and a totally wacky kinetic sculpture museum.

Oh - and here's how I managed to fit the front two 6x8 speakers:
(The unit above them is a soundstorm equalizer. I'll eventually build a fiberglass or lexan shell to eliminate phase cancellation, but they sound great already as I get plenty of bass from the two in the rear deck).
