Dies at a certain temperature when warming up

Post by Rickety Rhino »

Folks,
My engine almost dies every time it warms up past a certain temperature. It usually catches and runs normally after
that, but sometimes it dies completely and has to be restarted. This happens when the temperature gauge is about
half-way up to the usual operating temperature (long after the choke has opened). It happens again whenever the engine
has been off long enough to cool below that certain temperature. I've tried several things, but nothing makes
a difference: I plugged the TVSV 'M' port and HIC hose to disabled EGR, HIC and choke opener. I plugged the 2 hoses from
the EBCV to the carb. I checked all vacuum hoses, tightened carb mounting bolts, checked for vacuum leaks by spraying
starter fluid various places. I replaced the thermostat. This has been going on for a year or more.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks, Steve

had the same problem on a car i worked on in the shop maybe 13-14 years ago. after much hair- pulling, turned out to be an internal problem with the tvsv. (actually, have the same prob. with my work beater- not enough of a problem to be worth the $$ imo.) quick check- disconnect and plug both ends of the vac. line to the aap diaph, let it cool down, and drive it- bet the prob's gone! good luck.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

I did the quick check recommended above, and did not have the dying problem, but the engine raced a bit and acted differently while warming up. I replaced the TVSV with one from my parts car, which didn't have this dying problem last time it was running, but the same dying behavior persisted. Could it be the AAP?

with the tvsv hooked up, start the engine up when cold, then pull the vac line off the aap diaph- if you see fuel in the vac line, the diaph's ruptured and should be replaced. good luck!

I replaced the AAP with a new one, and still have the problem. Now I've replaced both the AAP and the TVSV and still have the problem. The problem disappears if I disconnect the AAP from the TVSV and plug the hoses.

Have you verified the choke is working properly? Sounds like it opens too early.
