Door Handle?

Post by Skipperz »

Ok. we got the drivers door open. I have 2 issues for the moment. The rubber window channel has reformed in a twist and that is why the window doesn't want to open. My Buddy suggests we boil it, reshape it and see if it holds. Any ideas failing that, where I can get new window gasketing?

Then the door handle. The handle is broken - the swivel bearing won't. And the resulting breakage explains the jam in the rods and why the lock wouldn't fully release and therefore the door would not open. Ok got that far. I am wondering if the MR2 door handle will work? Also the plastic connector at the door key cylinder has become dust. Again anyone think the parts would transfer from the MR2?

The Mr2 door handle is nothing like the Tercel, the cutout in the door is diffrent, it is flush with the door surface. If you wanted to cut into the door skin to make the cut out match, you might make the MR2 handle work, but it would be a big job and not easy to make look stock.

I might be able to find you a door handle in the local J-yard. which one do you need? left or right side, font or back. If boiling the window track does not work I could see if there was a good one in the Tercel in the junk yard when I go find you a good handle. PM me if you want me to get it for you.

I may have to take you up on the door handle, there are no Tercels in the local yards. I did come across the MR2, an old Cressida and an older Geo Prism. I am going tomorrow for the seats and to see what plastic rods connector pieces I can scavenge. I have zero body work experience and consider myself an advanced amateur backyard mechanic. I was hoping that there was an off the shelf sibling for the door handle. Although, mine is flush with the skin.... I'll keep you posted.

what part of MD are you in? i'm in baltimore, and it's good to see someone else on the list is in the area. like you found, there are NO tercels in the boneyards around here. i've got 4 complete doors off an '83 hanging up in my garage-- let me know what you need.
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

I do not think I have seen a TErcel4wd handle that is flush (I have owned 9 of them and worked on many others), the handle stands proud of the door skin surface. Unless for some reason they used a different handle on your '87, you may have to find a similar year car as your to get that handle. You might compare it to the MR2 handle to see if they are indeed the same.
