New shock and Spring suggestions.

Post by T4WDOR »

Anybody have any suggestions for some shocks and springs to go on my 85 4wd? I have some 15x8 XXR's with 155/65 tires and my fenders are rubbing the tires so i have to baby it like crazy. So im looking for some tighter suspension so i can drive it harder if i want too. thanks a ton.

I am not sure anyone has worked out a good solution yet, if you raise it too far in front you wear out your cv axles (because of the angle) and risk damaging your strut seals (they top out too easy). One easy thing to do is make a spacer that goes on top of the strut tower, high density plastic or aluminum.

I was going to try and fit a set of '88 Celica GTS struts (same strut in the '88-92 All-trac corolla). It has a stiffer spring and is larger diameter. You will have to swap out the top mount and there are a few other minor changes to make, but it is stiffer, and has the same travel and about the same length.

In the rear people have installed rear Pathfinder springs with longer shocks. Go read the thread on the "Barto lift".

Yeah, a 15x8" rim and tire combo is gonna rub almost no matter what. The widest I've fitted was a 15x7" with a 38mm offset w a 205/50/15.

Even if you lift the suspension a bit, the IFS front end will rub when you turn the wheel and tap the brakes due to body roll unless the springs are SUPER firm. Not sure what your off set is but most likely the only way to keep if from rubbing would be to put another set of bumpstops on the strut rod limiting travel. It works for the Miata guys.
