Need your Carb primary throttle shaft rebushed?

Post by CMB »

I just wanted to post my experience with an outfit called "Carburetors that work". I have had two carbs rebushed (primary throttle shaft on a aisin landcruiser carb and just had tercel aisin carb done) by this guy (Mike Beno), and I have been very pleased with his work. Mike has been very friendly and willing to give plenty of carb knowledge over the phone. I have been pleased with both of the rebush jobs he did, the landcruiser carb was done with a teflon bushing and the tercel with a bronze (maybe brass, I am not sure). He charged $50 each and required that I include pre-paid return shipping label. At my request, he removed the fuel/air mixture plug for no extra fee, which isn't a real hard job, but if you have never done it before, can be easy to bugger up the screw. Anyway, I just got the tercel carb and it idles so much better now.

Mike Beno's business info:
Carburetor's that work
190 Scottview, Glide, OR 97443

Like I said, Mike is really friendly, and I hope we can give him some business.

Also, if you have an Aisin carb that needs rebuild, but you don't have the time or not enough dare to dive in, I can rebuild it for you. Basic rebuild $150 includes all new seals, gaskets, needle and seat, and float. (includes secondary diaphragm,if needed). $210 if primary throttle needs rebushed (would outsource this work to Mike Beno). Includes testing on my tercel to ensure proper operation before return. 1-2 week turn around. Send me a PM if interested.

Just wondering how many miles were on your ride when you decided to rebush the throttle shaft?

The carb I had rebushed was from a car that had about 150k. There was noticeable slop in the throttle shaft (with the car off or carb in hand, turn the throttle just off idle and try to wiggle the shaft). However, I have another carb that came off a tercel with 230k and it has no noticeable slop.

Another check is to spray a little carb cleaner on the shaft on the accel cable side of the carb (on the outside of the carb base of course, not inside carb) while the vehicle is idling. If the idle races, then the throttle shaft bore is worn enough to create vacuum leak. A rebushed (and properly, freshly rebuilt) carb makes carb adjustment an enjoyable thing.

That would be a good deal, and with it tested you would get more than the comercial remanufactures do for you.

To expand your product line; has anyone tried to put the larger carb off of the 20r engine (early truck) on the 3a? One list member was speculating that might be as good as a weber (same size), and it is similar enough to the stock carb it would pass inspection in CA. If you are going to reconditioned carbs for this car you might want to look into offering a reconditioned 20r carb. It would be cheaper than doing the weber upgrade, and potentially provide more power as well., and be quasi "legal" since all of the emissions equipment would or could still be present.
