Before you pull it apart make sure you isolate the problem. It could be the front diff too. Check the front diff by removing the front cover and inspect it for missing teeth. The input shaft is fairly easy to check and change without pulling the trans, the roller bearing can go bad since it is so high and does not get good lube if it is low of gear oil. Drop the rear of the trans (remove the distributor and the top radiator hose to allow the engine to rotate down further), and remove the little plate behind the clutch on the bell housing (five 12mm bolts) and remove the input shaft. You can reach the front bearing through the hatch, and the rear input shaft bearing comes out with it. You can replace just the bearings on the input shaft.

I would check the front diff gears first.

Ok, so i haven"t had the motivation to figure out what is in need of repair in the trans/diff. Needed a larger vehicle anyway to fit 6 legally. So for anyone interested, it's up for sale. Bought a 2006 Sienna van and this lil monster is up for grabs.
I rebuilt the lower end of the motor about 10k miles ago. Bored out to 1.6l , new pistons, rods, bearings, seals, oil pump for a 20v 4age, valve seals, radiator, CV axles, struts & shocks, inner & outer tie rod ends, rebuilt dizzy, clutch & throwout bearing. Not the prettiest body-wise but its savable for someone with some bodywork experience. Been running Royal Purple synthetic for the last 3k miles. Has Audi aluminum 14" wheels and some Blizzaks that are almost done for. $500 if anyone is interested.
Really don't have the time to try and fix it or the room. My 20v 4AGE Paseo is more than enough to get me in the garage.

repost this in the complete cars for sale section, which is a subsection of the parts for sale/wanted section. you're more likely to get more people viewing it there.
