Idle problem - sticky choke?

Post by RiggerRob »

Hey, Tercel Wizards,

Just had my head replaced on my car, kudos to my awesome mechanic for being resourceful and thrifty as always. I took it on its first test drive today and it passed with flying colors - took Town Mountain Road from downtown Asheville up to the Blue Ridge Parkway (about a thousand foot climb), went all the way up at 40 mph in 3rd gear, no overheating, runs smooth and quiet as ever.

The problem: when I let off the accelerator, it 'hangs' at about 2000 rpm for maybe 4 seconds and then drops into smooth factory idle.It does this every time without fail and the engine runs great no matter what. Is this a sticky automatic choke, or is there some adjustment I can make on the carb - or whatever - to shorten this drop into 'high idle'? It's not that bad unless I'm shifting at speed - then it gets kind of annoying.

Really happy to have my T4WD back on the road!

Try lubing the accelerator cable first - drip a LOT of silicone lube into the casing while raised from the engine bay. Be sure to put a paper towel or shop cloth where the cable attaches to the accelerator pedal!

Thanks! Any lube in particular you recommend or just any spray silicone lube is fine?

Any silicone lube - spray is a bit messy and wasteful, but do-able. If possible, use a drip type.
Also put a few drops on the pivots of the pedal.

I added an extra throttle return spring INSIDE the OEM one...has to be a smaller diameter and the right length.

Thanks, Tom and Takza, seems like an obvious one now that I think about it. Now that the leaves are turning looking forward to zipping around on the Parkway in my 'new' car... ;-)

UPDATE: My mechanic adjusted the throttle stop on the front of the carb and the problem went away. Getting her ready for mountain winter!
