Heater Control Assembly Wanted

Post by hberdan »

Hey there, I am trying to locate a new heater control assembly--that is the heater faceplate gizmo with the levers and cables. If you have a spare in useable condition, please drop me a line,
Thanks!

Dave- I have the assembly minus one of the levers- the heater temperature lever. I swapped it into my wife's. There's also a guy on craigslist in the Springs that has one as a part of a pile of parts, but he won't let any go without taking all of them -and he wants like $150 or so.

These are not too time comsuming to remove are they. There is an '87 about to get sent to the crusher in the local yard, I can pull it for you if you can not find one locally, shipping should not be too costly. Let me know ASAP.

Yeah, please do it. I need one with the heater temp lever, as the temp lever broke in mine. If you want I can send some $$ via Paypal, just PM me. BTW, my 87 is a Deluxe, without air conditioning, if that matters at all. I don't think there is any difference?

That must be a common problem!!--the only thing wrong with mine is a broken temp control lever-- and I don't want to try to fabricate a new one, or repair it--too many bends in the sheet metal... Thanks!

I agree with "hberden" , I had so many tercels in the past which heat control are hard to move back and forth and only couple of them work smoothy . Last year I bought my wife a Tercel with bad heat controler then I swap with another whole controller system which work smoothy , Guess what it work like crap :? , then I realize the cable that attach to the heater controler at the firewall have to be in proper angle with a plastic clip that attach to rubber fuel line and heater cable ,a lot of plastic clip are missing , heater control turns 90 -100 degree that effect bending the cable.

FYI the Temp control lever breaks because the valve under the hood that lets coolant into the heater box gets stiff and needs cleaning.

Nope, it is very clean and functions just fine! In fact it is about as perfect as it could be. There must've been some binding under the console that caused the lever to go...

I replaced the heater control unit last week with a replacement assembly from Petros when I replaced the heater core. The lever for the temp control on the old one was broken in half.
It appeared to me during the disassembly of the dash panels, etc., that someone had previously rerouted the old unit's cables somewhat, creating a partial bind on at least the temp control cable, and perhaps that is what led to the eventual breakage of the lever. The previous owner had installed a new stereo and CD player when he bought the car, also replacing the original front speakers with some nice Kenwood units. I suspect he must've messed up the heater control cable routing during the process. The replacement I installed works very smoothly.
BTW, completely removing the old heater control unit, including the cables, from the car made it much much easier to remove and install the heater ducting and core than leaving the controls partially hanging in place.
Fwiw, I cleaned the replacement cables and control panel with compressed air and electrical grade silicone spray before installing, making sure to spray the silicone into the cable sheaths from both ends--and also used a light graphite grease on the control lever pivot points and tracks.
