I was playing Gran Turismo 2 (again) and I was reading one the descriptions of the MR2 and it appears that a JDM MR2 had a 3A-LU that had 16 valves. Is that correct?

Uhh...no. I think that would be a mistake in the GT3 specs for the car. The JDM MR2 did come with a 3AS engine in it's economy spec, but it was SOHC 8 Valve (although it did have about 90hp). The sport spec JDM MR2 had the MAP 16V 4age. As far as 3A engines go, the one out of the JDM MR2 is the highest powered I believe.

I guess they are wrong, that or I don't remember right. They are talking about the AW10 MR2, if I'm not wrong. I was looking at the Toyota engines website and the engine is SOHC and I doubt that it could be more than 12 valves, but it is known that all 3As are 8 valve engines.

Oh, when I was looking up the 3A-LU engine I saw some info of how the MR2 came about and I read that one of the designers or engineers in Japan wanted to used Tercel parts! That's interesting.

Would you mind posting the link where you read that information?
For what it's worth, and it may turn out to be worth something, the Tercel has the same ball joints as the AW11 MR2.

I just read it right now and I missed this: "The two above stories, while being told as fact for many years now, are simply *NOT* true. While the car did have an available 1500 cc motor, this was for a Japan only version that was never offered anywhere else in the world. " The part where it says about the Tercel parts, but instead they chose Corolla parts is towards the end of the page.

that was some neat info . I have an 89 MR2 non sc and I love it . The factory dark metallic blue paint has held up well and with over 2 hundred thou on the clock it's still going strong . I'm building a new motor for it but I think it's going to go into the 84 terc . I'm trying to find a wrecked sc mr2 so I can rob the parts for my nice 89 . Toyotas rule . B)
