Finally re-signed up for the forum. Its been a few years that were relatively repair free (only some minor stuff), but I need some help.

So I read a number of posts concerning rear bearings. My first question is whether a noise is enough indication to get them replaced. There is not really any play in the axle end when I try and move it, but there is definitely some funny rubbing noises when I turn it.

I have had the bearings done for me in the past, but I would really like it to be cheaper this time, so I was thinking of removing the axles myself and then bringing them into the shop to have them press on a new bearing. Is there a tool I can rent to do that, or is it just best to have someone do the whole job? I did a similar thing with my front bearing last year and it only cost me $20 in labor to get the old bearing pressed out and the new one in.

Welcome back! What was your prior nom de T4WD?

Since you've perused earlier rear axle bearing threads - honestly, it was easy. I did this last year and used OE Toy parts from Butler Toy - see my posts in the OE and AM Part Numbers Forum, as well as the other couple of threads I did.
As I've mentioned before, check the photos and get the gaskets and seals. I did borrow a slide hammer from AutoZone, but discovered it would not work on the Tercel's little flange. But the leaky oily axle popped out with ease and the rusty one did take some prying and "field expediency" to remove - but all worked out easier than one might think.
While what occasioned my work was a very leaky DS axle, the right one was quite rusty and wobbly and the one that caused the noise.
Apart from the cost of the parts, the o/s labor cost to remove the old bearings and retainers and install the new was only $25 at a local garage.
I also bled the brakes again, as the backing plates were off.
