Re: project Tess
Welcome to the List! where do you live?.
the dust shield on the brakes are not really necessary, but they do two important things: on rough gravel roads they help keep slashed gravel out of the caliper, and when you hit a puddle of water they shield the brakes from getting totally soaked. Disk brakes recover pretty quick after getting wet (unlike the old drum brakes). to avoid these hazards you just avoid puddles and driving on gravel roads.
I think it is darn near impossible to bend a hub as you suggest, more likely the front wheel bearing is shot and allowing it to wobble. The front wheel bearing is not a "do it yourself" job if you never have worked on cars before. but you can still save money by removing the brakes, tie rod, axle nut, etc. and remove the whole strut in an assembly, and take it to a machine shop (NAPA, some O'riliy, etc) and have the just press out the old bearing and install the new one. than you take it back and install it Tuesday night.

Re: project Tess
use a good quality socket and wrench set, ATF makes an excellent penetrating oil, along with the heat, should get it apart. And if all else fails, a chisel is easier than a hack saw. but either can work.
