Shocks and struts

Post by tealindy »

I have an 85 and 86 tercel 4wd wagon. I put new Monroe shocks (rear) on the 86 about a year ago, the shocks were blue I dont remember what model #.
They have done just fine.

Now the 85 needed new ones so I ordered Monroe and these are yellow #55083. The problem with these is when I go over something like a speed bump they knock like they are topping out. I called and they said this is the shock for my wagon and it doesnt matter about the color. I did notice there are 2 models of this shock. 55083 and 5083.
They told me the 5083 was for a car not the wagon and they think the shocks were not installed properly.

Has anyone used either the Monroe 55083 or the 5083 shocks?

I don't know what vehicle a Monroe 5083 fits and I don't know of any yellow Monroe shocks for this vehicle. There is a 5803 Monroe shock that is black that fits this vehicle. It is a twin tube design, which is superior in my opinion. There is a blue Monroe, PN 33049 that is a monotube shock. The monotube design usually has better performance when new but are not very durable. The slightest ding in them renders them useless. The Monroe monotube is cheaper too.

I think the "car" (sedan) version of the Tercel uses a rear strut, you would not be able to put one in your wagon

I would go straight to Monroe and enquire of it - giving the vehicle as the 4WD version.
As keith mentions, the sedan uses struts in the rear - as does the 2WD Wagon.

Thanks for the info. I am going to return these yellow ones even though they keep telling me those are the ones for my tercel. 4wd wagon.
Oriellys has the blue Monroe that I have on the 86, totally different part number, and they have done fine on it, I am sure they will do fine on my 85.
They are also almost $20 cheaper too! I dont understand why there is such a discrepancy on the part I needed, go figure.
