i've got a 1983 tercel and i have no clue on how to take off the rear bumper

open rear hatch
lift carpet
remove 4 rubber plugs (two each side)
remove bolts in holes

If the mounts are bent up from a rear-ender, you may have to give the whole assembly a big jerk to get it out (even with the mounting bolts removed). If you know any big jerks, have them handy.
