reman dissy on ebay

Post by gmeddy »

hi you fantastic bunch of tercel lovers!
i have just stumbled accross this new looking (remanufactured is closer to new than i thought i'd ever see for my old beast) distributor on ebay!
item number 120624808307
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... 0624808307

i was just wondering if it would fit my tercel and run well, i am currently running the old non electronic points that do not have the coil integrated onto the dissy like this one looks like it has.

is this one here listed a electronic ignition set up or does it still have points?
it just looks way different to my existing set up thats why i thought it was...

Please dont buy this out from under me... i really need it... :(

Looks like a good buy. You will need a cap and rotor of course (see if they guy sell it has one for you). You should be able to make it work, you will just have to supply 12v power to the correct contact that comes from right place on the ignition switch. I would assume it mounts in the same location in the head with the same fit, and will match the cam gear (I do not see why Toyota would change that). But the cam gear is easy to switch out if necessary.

This one has no points, it is all solid state and self contained. You just need to supply 12v power to it. I have found them to be very reliable, little/no maintenance. But if you need parts you may have to buy them from overseas (did that distributor come to AU in any other cars?). This is probably the least expensive way to covert your Tercel to electronic ignition.

Hi Glen, shameless plug here. I've also got a distributor on ebay but it is an original points based one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Toyota-Terce ... 500wt_1156 also a water pump going really cheap http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NOS-Repco-Wa ... 500wt_1156. sorry, i should have offered them here first but I wasn't sure that we have many aussie members frequenting this forum anymore. I probably shouldn't pull them off ebay as someone has already bidded

thanks guys...
so I just gotta work out if it's worth the price... postage is another US$55 on top of the US$65 for the dissy, plus the cost of the cap and rotor.

just to confirm, so does this dissy have the coil built in? and then would that of course mean my existing coil would no longer be used and the 12v power supply that is currently connected to the coil would instead go to the wire on the new dissy?

thanks again

Your old coil will not be needed anymore, the coil is built-into the assembly (it is that squarish box thing in the picture). Presuming the cam gear and the mount are the same, yes, all you need to do is supply `12v to the connector. There is another contact in the connector but I do not remember what that is for, the tachometer perhaps. The FSM wire diagram on this forum should have the correct wire diagram for that distributor.

the only problem buying parts on E-Bay , if doesn't work or wrong /missing parts , then no full refund ( shipping cost, you lose )
I did once bought complete head gasket kits for $ 30.00 +shipping ,some how some gaskets look kind of weird, valve stem seal are hard to install, etc .
Think of all that work ,start the car and POFFHH, No way ! I decide buy local Parts store and spent $120 for complete,if wrong it can exchange.
If buying parts from seller who use to own those car ,then that would be better chance , anything from Disturator store are more chance as micky mouse product parts.

NO parts house in OZ has reman distributors?
As toughtercel says - particularly if you in OZ buy from a seller in the USA - wot hoppens if the eBay dist is bad?
Frankly, I'd go with his suggestion; it will cost more, but peace of mind... I'd imagine there will also be some kind of warranty from an OZ parts house seller.
Disclaimer - I did that back in 2006 and have been happy.
