50 bucks-- are you NUTS? i'm glad to pay takza half that just for the front corner lenses! tell you what, if money's the problem, i'll lend you the $50 and you can pay me back with the bucks you'll make parting it out here. doesn't look rusty from the pics- just wish it wasn't on the other side of the world from me (i live in MD and have the exact same car rusting away in my driveway.)
if it aint there, there's a good chance it won't break!

My fiance and I went to check it out today. Its worn out, but not dead yet. I decided we'll pick it up on wednesday and limp it back to our town. I can pull the head and keep my fingers crossed for a burnt valve. If its holey pistons, I will part it out to the forum. the owner is a super nice guy, and lives in a place where you'd need the 4wd. more photos and story to follow....
congrats- kudos to you for making a wise decision!!

get that car and fix it! some idiot will buy and just tow it to a wreck and get $150 for it, where they will just crush it.
I can get you engine parts if you need them, cheap. Well worth the save, even just as parts (though if the body is decent it would be a shame to part out a car just because the engine is bad).
Take a tow rope and if you have to pull it home with some on the brakes. the Tercel will handle the tow, just take it slow.
Petros, i will be following your head gasket replacement guide to remove the head from this one. i like the idea of not removing the carb or intake/exhaust manifolds like i did on my camo toy. i've looked through the forums for pictures or descriptions of replacing valves on our 3A heads, but found none. is it fairly straight-forward?
I intend to get this puppy running for some 4wd fun!
yes it is easy, you remove the rocker arm assembly, and than you have to put a spring compressor the valve you want to replace. You can rent these from Autozone if you can not borrow one. Watch out for the keepers! Make sure you put them in the same way they came out (use some grease to hold them in place before you let off the spring pressure).
If you have a burned exhaust valve it would likely be #1 or #2, I would consider replacing all the exhaust valves. If one was heat damaged the others may not be far behind and they do not cost much. set your spark timing at 10 deg BTDC will prevent valve damage (exhaust runs cooler), and it will prevent this kind of damage in the future.
$50?! That's the deal of the century. There's a guy selling a solid 3A motor here in Portland, OR for $250 (he'd probably take less). Oh the possibilities!
