hey no smashing up my car! i might actually keep it for a while now.
i went over there today and put a battery charger on the almost dead battery, from the cranking, and driving it without the alternator belt...with headlights...doh! heh and I pulled the fuel filter. But that is as far as it went...as it was a high of -3. Tomorrow high of -2.
and for our friends in other countries, I mean fahrenheit, but surely I have nothing to complain about compared to out canadian friends!
But when I pulled the fuel filter...no fuel came out of the hose that goes to the tank....hm.
but the thing is just over half way down...there's no way that pre-filter in the tank could have clogged all the way around it.. oh i dunno i will just have to hook a pump (or my mouth, i'd rather not) up to it and see if anything comes out of it
but the accel pump wasn't doing anything on the carb today so I guess the bowl is totally empty (i assumed it was totally full) so maybe my fuel pump did go down? it looks stock and its 20+ years old.
Heh I removed insurance on it though so i am in no hurry
but still selling parts if anyone wants them!

I haven't seen a frame that rusty for quite a while. It's about as bad as they get before something breaks.
At least someone cared for that car enough to put on as much bondo as they did. It's a horrible way to try to fix it, but it says something about how much people like these cars. Usually noone would go to the trouble of putting THAT much bondo on a Tercel.

A fuel pump change is pretty easy (access is the biggest issue, and its not even a big issue if that makes sense)
Its possible that your el-rusto tank has some loverly rustflakes blocking the fuel sump in the tank?
You know of a good way to look? Remove the fuel sender and use a flashlight might work. But you'll need that hatch and all doors open (gags) lol.
If that is the issue, you could try to scavenge the yards for a tank.
You know what.. I bet that that is the issue. After I replaced my faulty pump (which was indicated by oil on the firewall behind the pump and gassy oil) my stall problem almost was eliminated. Now I think I have a dirty filter. I'll have to replace it soon.
I kind of hope and don't hope that was the only issue, you know? Don't hope because you will have wasted your time and money, but hope because it'd mean it'd be a very easy repair.

When I first bought the car, the gas tank was leaking...so I dropped it and repaired it nicely, and I had to rebuild that thing on the tank where the hoses hook up, all the tubes rusted away to nothing...made new ones out of copper lines, did that before on a truck,,,just bend them right and solder them in! new hoses...all was good...ended up dropping the tank three times though
(easier than on the truck I did before, 35 gallon tank dammit!)
It only makes sense to assume that something clogged the line in the tank...except that the pickup at the bottom of the tank has this VERY nice plastic filter thing on it, and there is NO WAY that whole thing could have clogged. But if I can't suck any gas out of the line in the engine bay, I will have to assume that somewhere it is clogged. maybe a rusty line is giving me trouble! I could run a new line, I have done that before too...just get a roll of copper tubing from the hardware store in the correct diameter and go to work! zip ties and bendy bendy and you are in good shape.
I'll just have to make sure the gas is coming into the engine bay properly...then I will have to check the pump....simple stuff first I guess!

Try removing the gas cap... then using compressed air, try blowing the fuel supply line from the filter back to the tank. If some crap is lodged in the line you might be able to free it. Use low pressure to start with...maybe 25 to 35 psi. Also look for leaks in that line...it doesn't help the fuel supply situation if the pump is sucking air. Good luck.

Hey that's a sweet tip, Chris, I will have to check that out...I haven't touched it in a few days but I will get to it soon...
I suppose it only makes sense that my fuel supply line might be just as rusty as everything else on that car, the lines at the tank were rusty, so why wouldn't they be under the car too? okay good things to check
and as far as compressed air through the lines....i like it...and if you hear gurgling in the tank, then I know i'm good
hee hee

Amsoil, Amsoil... I want to pour in Amsoil I want that Amsoil now... DANG YOU QUEEN AND AMSOIL!!!
Lol....
I'd suggest pulling your fuel gauage sender and peeking around in the tank. It can't hurt to check, as a lot of small rust flakes can clog things quickly.
Copper tubing isn't expensive, you may want to give that a shot.
Blowing air thru the tube may clear the line out a bit, but it'll just push it back into the tank where it'll get sucked right back up.
Man.. For a sec I thought I was loosing my mind, thought you were talking to me calling me Chris.. Thought HOW THE HECK DOES HE KNOW MY NAME? For a sec... lol.

I KNOW ALLL!!!!!!
Except for...everything that actually matters. hee hee!
Yes I was recalling to my dad today of how I redid the fuel lines on an old truck I had and it was actually a piece of cake, after untold days spent on the web saying "tell me how to avoid redoing my fuel lines" and I might even have enough left of the correct size for the Tercel! I should just do it! I should do the return line, too! the vapour line can kiss my ass.
My dad said "do you have to flare the ends?" I said "just hoses on the ends" damn so easy! heh heh heh well maybe I will do that. Then at least I will know that my rusty rusty lines won't give out someplace sucky.
I have this feeling that once I check the lines, or replace the lines, and then put in my new fuel filter ($4.50 at walmart! damn them!!!) and then check my fuel pump, I might solve it.
Maybe! fingers crossed...heh
As for my tranny....no good! sorry Mr 2manytoys. I wonder if I flushed it like you did though, and then refill, if it would help my sychro situation. I should try that after I get it running again. Hey typrus should I drain it some and put seafoam in it and drive it like I stole it?!? hehehehhe
Oh I SWEAR I saw a fuel treatment thing with the Amsoil name on it. I don't remember if it was a cleaner, or an additive...but it was like 7.50 a bottle

You could put some Sea-Foam in the tranny and run it around for a while, but I wouldn't recommend stressing it. Just remember the potential issues.
I say stick with the easily repairable things first. I dunno what could go wrong in a tranny with a solvent in it.
They say you can pour SF in your crankcase, so putting it in the tranny should be no different.
Driving that vehicle like you stole it may not be the best thing for your health lol.. Just don't get hit by and flying squirrels or angry white little bunny rabbits... RETREAT! RETREAT!!!!!
While you are underneith, you might want to get a frame-work started.. Buy some scrap metal and weld it to the bottom running next to the frame supports with crossmember supports between. Add strength however you can I'd say.
If you have the desire you could make a whole custom chassis for this baby!!

I was thinkin about it actually heh, it would be alot easier if I could roll the car onto the side hehehehehe like on a couple mattresses or something heheheheh
Without a job, I have all the time in the world (but little energy) and I still know everyone at my old job, the spiral staircase factory, so I could easily have more free scrap metal than I could ever use.
I could build a whole frame out of 2" angle! hehehehhe
hmm aluminum would be sweeter though...hmmmm yep endless supply of aluminum angle too...hmm
my welder won't do aluminum though
that would be crazy if I made a frame, and then put the tercel on top of it.....
But by the time I was done, the thing would be as heavy as a traditional 4x4 and then it would be meaningless

Not if you do it right. Don't put a 1/4 inch thick sheet underneith, just enough cross-brace supports to keep it from turning into an accordian if you have a ditch incident or a drunk jack-weed in a Blazer rear-end you. Or if you get T-boned. And besides, when you've lost 600 lbs thru rust falling off and just the process of oxidation, 400 lbs of angle doesn't exactly make it as heavy as a traditional 4x4.
Spiral staircase factory... Sounds like something out of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour or a bad horror film.

I use Amsoil in all my rigs and my trusty lil 89 mr2 has over 204 thou on it with no issues and same with my honda car at 160 thou . I have found in some import tranny's with many miles on them that full synth oil is actually to slick and the gear's don't mesh well  I tried this with the mr2 and had this happen so I went back to a reg gear oil . As for the rust in your fuel tank !! I had this problem too . I removed the tank and then removed the sending unit . I put 1 gallon of kerosen in and dropped a med size 4 ft chain in to the tank and then proceded to move the tank around so the chain can knock all the rust off the wall of the tank . I had to do this twice on my tank . I also had to clean the pick up screen . I just popped it off and let it sit in a cup of Berrymens chem tool b-12 . after all the cleaning was through I installed the fuel tank into the car and added some fresh gas and chem tool b-12 and a new fuel filter and the terc fired right up and ran great . I should also note that while the tank was out I used the air compressor to blow out all the line's and I scraped the rust off the sending unit and it now work'sTyprus wrote:Amsoil, Amsoil...
