New guy from Victoria

Post by sunray »

Hello, my name is Chris and I'm from Victoria, BC. I am a red seal automotive technician who works on Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Mitsubishis mostly.

In my spare time I build Toyotas for racing autocross, solo1, and hillclimbs. I am hoping to pick up my second 4x4 tercel next week. I have owned newer 4runners and such but the tercel is just one amazing little car that I could never seem to stop regretting selling. Here is a link to some vids of some of my cars at the track and some pics of my old tercel. Hopefully some tercel stuff soon too, huh?

WF, i'm always looking. there was a good parts vehicle for $200 recently but i passed on it because i would have had to drive it over the malahat to get it home and it surely would have left me stranded. another board member took a look and told me it was a piece of doodie and not worth risking the drive so i passed on it. they pop up several times a month though, just keep checking usedvictoria.com, kijiji, and craigslist for the entire island.

Thanks i'm always poking around on the web but i rarely search in victoria. I know where there's a couple over on Lasqueti Island but it's a couple hundred bucks just to get them to the big island. Also out in Ucluelet there's a few of them in a yard with moss growing in the drip rails. I'm hoping i'll find one in a backyard sooner or later for virtually nothing. For anyone checking out this thread watch those youtube videos there's some goodies.

lasqueti, how did you find out there are tercs over there? do you visit it? i've never been but heard about the pioneer lifestyle that is pretty common there. wild. what years are the ones in the yard in ucluelet? if they have clinometers, stock roof racks, the newer headlights ('87-'88) i would grab those things. they are items that are already pretty hard to find. there's an '87 at blacky's in duncan and a pretty stripped '83 at bob and john's in cobble hill.

I've done a bit of construction work over on Lasqueti. It's basically treated like a private island so you have to step carefully over there. I know there's an 85 auto that's pretty beat up and a couple others I haven't got close enough to ID. I Have to go back out and find out more about the west coast cars. I know that one is an SR5 but other than that i'm not sure. I've just been tipped off to one in Port Alberni too but i don't even know if it's 2wd or 4.

Sorry, Chris don't mean to trample on your thread. I subscribed to your youtube channel and i advise everyone else to do the same. There's some great toyota madness on there.

This is OT, but - - -
I HAD to Google Lasqueti Island after dlb's comments. Pretty interesting! Certainly some folks who are - eclectic. The island's own website is sorta informative.
I noticed there was an emphasis on the ferry being people only. I figgered there were no cars on the island - and no gas station is mentioned. How did they get there/are supplied - by private ferry?

Lasqueti Island certainly is an interesting place. There is a fairly extensive road network on the island, though the only pavement is the incredibly steep hill right at the dock. Vehicles must be transported to and from the island by private tug & barge, at no small expense. That's why there's some interesting vehicles rusting away over there. Gasoline is brought over via a once a week dangerous cargo trip on the barge along with propane bottles and the like.

tom, that's funny that you're googling such an obscure place. even living here my whole life i've never ventured onto lasqueti. just picked up a hitchhiker from there once who filled me in on it a bit. the guy, and many others there i believe, was a homesteader and just had a simple hut he made, along with a rain shower and covered cooking area. did a lot of farming. he used a generator for light in the evening and that was pretty much it. i think emmahumpfritter would love it there. their 911 system is wack. if you are in dire straits, you're pretty much doomed because they don't have ambulance. takes about an hour to get any really sick people off the island. it's an interesting trade-off for the privacy and seclusion but i can see where they're coming from.

I forgot to add - apparently it's the only inhabited island in the Sound (word ?) that is not hooked up to the mainland electrical grid. So they rely on solar and wind and fossil fuel generators for their electricity - the whole island! I think it had less than 800 permanent residents. One hotel/restaurant and a bunch of B&Bs. The Wiki article said to bring your own food...

I guess you'd say it's in the Sailish Sea which received it's current name for the 2010 olympics in Vancouver. Confusingly the island is referred to as being part of the "Northern Gulf Islands" (The Sailish Sea used to be Strait of Georgia which used to be the Gulf of Georgia back in the old days.) Lasqueti is kind of the odd one out of the gulf islands because it has the largest size and population without a car ferry but it is not the only inhabited island in the area not hooked up to grid power.
