rthunder wrote:The Suzuki SX4 is a cute car, but hardly a successor to the Tercel SR5 4WD. It is a tiny little thing. I used to take my Tercel out into the desert with a futon in the back and all my camping gear. Later I built a lifted frame for the futon so all my stuff could stash neatly underneath. It was a cheap and economical car camping conversion.

No one here has mentioned the Subaru Outback or Forester. Any opinions on those as a successor?
Not to derail the thread, but if you haven't slept in your tercel (this goes for all forum members) you aren't doing it right. I'm 6'2" and I sleep semi-comfortably in my tercel.

It's an experience.

Yes, as a matter of fact I have slept in it several times.

I have to get a good look at the inside of the SX4 with the seats folded down, maybe I will go drive one as if I am interested in buying one, and lay down in the back (and have my tape measure in my pocket).

I camped in mine and could sleep diagonally...but not very well...6' tall.

I live in a school bus so my 83 hatchback is my guest cabin. It gets used on a regular basis without complaint.
I don't think that we'll see any kind of 'successor' to the t4 wagon. It's unfortunate but true that there will never be anything quite like it again. It's not that it isn't a really interesting and probably quite functional vehicle in it's own way but the SX4 just isn't like a tercel at all. Besides i don't think one would ever last 25+ years like Tercels have. and while those BFG a/t's look really cool under a car like that... they'd look way better under a proper wagon.
