radiator?

Post by dirklc »

I'm buying a 1984 T4WD that needs a radiator. I've found some inexpensive options (like RockAuto) but they appear to be the 1 row version. Any suggestions on where I can source a quality replacement 2 row rad? I came across this one:

What do you think?

Also, I noticed that the same part number is recommended for AT and MT versions (it has the tranny oil cooler). I assume they are interchangeable and I just ignore the oil cooler, right? Just want to make sure I'm tracking down the right part.

There's a link under the product photo ("More Info") where they claim it's 2 rows. It has plastic tanks and copper brass core. I haven't been able to find anything with metal tanks for under ~$350.

A radiator chain called "Performance Radiator" sells a metal tank rad for the Tercel (their logo is a cactus), their price is competitive. Some around here do not care for the Performance radiator product but I have seen them and they are well made, if you can get the double row one from them I doubt is would cost more than about $170.

The plastic tank one is stock, and it seems to hold up well, over 100k plus miles is typical. As the plastic ages is breaks down and eventuality cracks appart, no way to fix it (there is almost no way I know of to prevent plastic from getting brittle as it ages, I have looked into it). Usually the copper ones will corrode, so they do not last forever either.

Be careful of the made in China rads, got one with metal tanks, the fit wasn't right and the fan sensor wouldn't seat properly, shop recommended an a/m sender that seals on the threads instead of the o-ring and use a hammer to make it fit (slight interference on the rs frame rail), I returned it and forked for OE.

A single row rad is fine in Ohio. I installed a Kyosi (sp? - same as OEM) single row I bought from Rockauto for ~ $90 and it cools OK even in 100* Texas heat. Just makes your fan run a bit more when the car is not moving, but otherwise there is no downside. Plus you can always use the trans fluid cooler to cool motor oil, though I haven't done this yet. No need for metal tanks, the plastic ones hold up long enough.
It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.
