The service manual for my '88 doesn't show how to change the power steering pressure hose. I know of alldata as a source of service techniques but can't take advantage of that. A mechanic with the intent to save me some money fitted a hose with
fittings he fabricated. It didn't hold up. I have a aftermarket hose (Gates). Anyone out there know where I can access a how to
manual on line to see if the install is something I can handle

There is the Factory Service Manual link at the top of the page. Replacing a hose should be straight forward, you remove the fittings at each end, and any supporting clamps to free the hose. All of the fluid will drain out when you remove the hose fitting, if the fluid is recent you can drain it to a clean container to reuse it later. Then you can cut the old hose off the fittings and install the new hose, make sure it is high pressure hydraulic hose, not heater hose. You will need to install some high quality hose clamps instead of the swagged ferrules, this should make a good repair. If you are really determined to make a factory-like repair (without having to pay dealer prices) you can take the old hose assembly to a hydraulics shop (anywhere they service tractors or farm equipment) and for not too much money they will replace the hose with high quality hydraulic line and swag new ferrules onto your old fittings.
Make sure you keep everything clean and do not allow dirt to get into the hydraulics at any time. Clean off the fittings before you remove them, and temp plug the holes with paper wad plugs when you remove the hose assembly. I think all you will need is a 12mm or 14mm open end wrench. After everything is reinstalled, top up fluid and start it up, look for leaks, move the steering back and fourth lock to lock. Turn it off and top up the fluid the rest of the way.
It is messy, and access may be a bit tricky (it might save time to remove other components in the way, like the battery or radiator, to get access), but it is not a particularly difficult repair.
Good luck.

In addition to the FSM, check out http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repair ... 52800523b5
However, this is one of the rare instances where the AZ site does not have actual photographs.
Otherewise, the AZ site menu is quite invaluable, and frequently more informative than the FSM.

Re: Install of p/steering pressure hose
This is quite a reliable and helpful post. Well, my brother is planning to change the power steering hose of his car this weekend but he is still a newbie and doesn't know how to start doing it. Lucky I was able to find your post with good instructions. Anyway, I'm gonna share this to my brother and thanks for sharing it.Petros wrote:There is the Factory Service Manual link at the top of the page.
