'85 4WD for sale in LA area

Post by deejay1272 »

Only $4,000! *Sheesh*

(sure does look good though)

--------------------------------------

1983 Toyota Tercel Wagon 4X4 Super Clean, Every Button Works! 30 MPG FOUR WHEEL DRIVE "ON THE FLY!!!!!" RUNS GREAT!!!

*****YOU WON"T BELIEVE HOW NICE THIS CAR IS************** HURRY IT WON"T LAST! AWESOME VINTAGE SURF MOBILE SNOW BOARDING MOBILE CAMPING CAMPER W/ TONS OF SPACE VERY RELIABLE THE PAINT AND INTERIOR ARE ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!

4X4 works perfect, Engine runs cool and steady............175k w/ oil changes every 2500, runs extremely well, Oil is transparent clean, shifts perfectly; smoothly without hesitation. I don't know how serious you are, and I'm not trying to create a sense of urgency, but this car is extremely rare, the chance of finding another like it in this collector condition is nil, zip, zero. I'm not misrepresenting it a bit, you have to see it to believe it. Every button works, everything is in 100% working order. This car doesn't overheat, the engine is quiet, the seats are multi-levered (three separate adjustment wheels and lever) to provide proper lumbar support which makes the ride really comfortable and quiet. $20 Bucks almost fills it, and that will take days to use. It shifts to 4WD on the fly, with six gears total. It has totally been gone over and the Master Cyl, Brakes, Brake pads, Tires, Battery, Pro Window Tint, Thermostat, and Windshield Wipers are BRAND NEW!

* It was owned by a pilot who stored it covered in an aircraft hanger for 20 years. The interior rubber is flawless, guess that's why.

So if you're serious, this car rocks! + PLUS; It's a Four Wheel Drive large enough to take camping, surfing, or snow boarding to way out places and comfortably sleep in because the back is huge and tall for large loads, seats five w/ room for extra gear. ...it's a max-hybrid of function, fun, economy, work van, camper, SUV 4X4, Retro - Collector - City cruiser Car!

I truly wish we could afford to keep this vehicle, but we cannot because, it does not fit our family. It is a gem, and certainly won't last beyond the first person who sees & drives it.

I hope this description helps.

If you are still interested, you can leave your #, and I'll give you a call. SORRY, NO TRADES.
Thank you,
Mac

Maybe they are not really all that overpriced...what is a couple grand...a house payment for most people in CA? If you get a good running, clean unique car that is getting hard to find a few grand does not seem outrageous to me! :o

It does look nice. Maybe tercel4wdrules could check it out?
I'll send an email similar to the one I sent to the $4500 T4WD two weeks ago - maybe this guy will deign to answer.
Loved the description - but missed "shifts right through the gears clean"...
I also liked the part about "$20 almost fills it." DId gas go way down in LA recently? $20 in STL is less than 7 gallons currently.

Flipper. Car was listed and sold a couple of weeks ago from seller in Corona, CA. Asking price then was $1,900. New owner, Mac, is using same pictures posted by previous owner.

Hi,
Just curious about the Tercels you are thinking of selling and what kind of shape they are in.
Thanks,
Ed

The seller of this car actually answered my email. It follows, with my answer to him below. Note that I never use the long form of my name in conversation or (non-legal) letters, but he did - so I responded in kind...
Thomas,
Thank you for your letter and the spirit it was written it. I understand your enthusiasm and would also like to see this nostalgic gem preserved. It is a rare find to have one of these surface after near 30 years in such amazing original condition. I remember when they first came out, and must confess that God has finally answered my ancient pray of ownership.
I'd like to oblige your record as the topper
[Ed-?], the fact is, I've gotten somewhat attached to this little wagon and her "Ugly Duckling" charms, scheming on ways to keep her. Regardless, we're in a big hurry to sell her to pay our bills.

I'll be driving her up to the So Cal mountains this Morning, where I hope to spark the interest of a resident or skier, as they require 4X4 in the winter.
Once she sells, I make you aware of figure for your club's record book.

If there is any member of your club that would like to own a "Cherry" Tercel 4X4 Wagon, please forward them my email. We are negotiable, and I guarantee to whom ever purchases her, they will be tickled pink.
One side note (of which I'm sure you are aware): I was astonished to read that the factory MPG Hwy ratings were surpassed by two miles per gallon @ 32 in non-affiliate survey.
Graciously,
Pastor Mac

Mac -
Thanks for the reply.
As mentioned, your ad was already on our site.
Sincerely,
Mister Tom

What a nice guy! I hope he finds a buyer that will continue to take good care of this pristine example. Thanks for sharing his response, Thomas.

I think that's Mister Tom now! 8)

$4K was about what I would offer the guy locally who has one like that with ~80K on it. :(

I spoke to Pastor Mac this morning and we had a nice conversation. I was actually looking forward to seeing this vehicle, but like the reply that he sent to Mister Tom, the car is now up in Wrightwood. This mountain community is located approximately 70 miles away from my residence and didn't seem too clear about when I could look at the vehicle today. It didn't take too long for him to figure out he was speaking to someone that knows these vehicles fairly well. Pastor Mac mentioned that he looked up what the MPG rating was for this vehicle and he came upon probably some carsurvey.org reviews for the vehicle wherein he found 32 MPG. While on this conversation topic with Pastor Mac, I decided to pull out my trusty 1983 Tercel brochure, and for CA cars the 6 speed wagons were rated at 31/42 HWY respectively. He was very surprised to hear this, I was too, when I first stumbled upon this information. The only way I think I could achieve 42 MPG would be on highway-only travel on a hot day with no wind and a continuous 50-55 MPH speed. I found out that this vehicle does have the electric sunroof. He said he was a bit negotiable on the price, but it was made clear that he's out to make a profit from this sale and he's sure that the vehicle is going to sell over the weekend. A strongpoint for him is the condition of the vehicle, however, I'm sure there are more low-mileage T4WD's hiding out in private garages, some which have been meticulously maintained by their caring owners. About mid-way through our conversation he mentioned that a gentleman from STL had contacted him, and before he was able to continue I interrupted and asked: "Is his name Tom?" A brief moment of silence followed. Then he replied a bit puzzled and affirmed that the STL gentleman's name was indeed Tom and continued to ask whether I knew him and I confirmed. He said he was now receiving out-of-state inquiries for his vehicle and was a bit in disbelief because of this, it seemed that he attributed this due to his ad being listed on here. I was not surprised to hear that, especially since two of the vehicles in my fleet have been acquired out-of-state. It was a nice conversation, although he wanted me to acquire his vehicle, there's no way I would be able to afford it at a $4,000 price tag. I thought I would share some of the details of the lively conversation here.

On a side note, $20 will buy me just over a half-tank of 91 octane fuel in Los Angeles, which I will most likely average a paltry 24 MPG due to the stop-and-go driving.

Interesting - on several levels.
As documented before in '05...I had a then-new '83 SR5 MT, no AC. This had, of course, the "highway" ratios. The best I ever obtained was during the Fall on a trip in IL/IN, flat pretty straight Interstates, no wind, windows closed, two people onboard with minimal luggage. The best MPG was 35 - tops. In suburban driving it was in the mid to upper 20s.
In my note to "Pastor Mac" I was tempted (giggle) to mention the mileage, but let it go.

Hopefully he took my response's salutation and signature in the manner which I intended - that of being snarky...
"Pastor" Mac indeed!
