Meet FrankenTurd

Post by turdsmell#2 »

Well, I decided to follow my heart and fix my wrecked old 86 SR5 with parts from my new smoking 88, instead of rebuilding the head on the 88. Ladies and Gentlemen meet frankenturd! :D half 86 half 88, all tercel! and suprisingly everything works. It took a day and a half of blood, sweat. tears and a small fire and except for paint in the spring, it is done. I gotta say it feels good to be back in the saddle after driving my dolphin motorhome to work for the last 2 months. I posted before and afters for y'all. Thanks for everyones help and advice!!!!!!!

I'd think you'd have had some fairly serious frame damage there...except that the bumper looks intact.......you just replaced the sheetmetal?

got really lucky, missed the bumper all together. I had to cut a section of the inner fender out of the 88 and weld it onto the 86, replace the radiator, fan, cross brace, bottles, fender and hood of coarse.

Just like the Johnny Cash song about the guy that worked in a Cadalac factory: You can say your Tercel is an "'86 and 87".

When people ask me I tell them my Tercel is an "'83, 84, 85, 86, and '87 Tercel" I got parts from all over.

A few more parts and you can say the same!
'87 Tercel 4wd SR5 (current engine swap project)
'84 Tercel 4wd (daily driver, with on going mods)
'92 Mazda MPV 4wd (wife's daily driver)
'85 Tercel 4wd DLX auto(daughter's daily driver)
'01 Honda Civic (other daughter's daily driver)

his name is ron. the '87s and '88s started coming in actually decent colours but somehow i got stuck with the one ugly one: burgundy. i've since painted him lime green and flat black (http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... f=8&t=5814) and the bud who first dubbed him wanted to rename him kermit, but ron just stuck. i like it.

Duh, I guess i could of just looked under all your post to see his name (i am still getting used to this forum thing). I like Ron much better than Kermit, Ron is a workin mans name. I checked his new paint out, it is loud, I LOVE IT! cool graphics! I am going to paint as soon as the weather gets better, any advice?

no sweat. it took me forever to take full advantage of this forum as well.

yup, the green is washed out in all the pics i take of ron but rest assured, it's dayglo. i hate looking for my car in a parking lot and love green, so it was a no-brainer. honestly though, in light of my recent fender bender, if i could do it again i don't think i would. total cost for the paint, materials, and my buddy's labour came to about $1200. i'm happy with the job but the problem is that, no matter what, people will bump their shopping carts into it, people will ding it when they open their doors, i will back it into friends' trucks going way too fast--it's going to degrade at some rate. because i had just put a bunch of time and money into the appearance, i had a hard time accepting that and it really bugged the sh*t out of me when any of these things happened so if i were to get another terc, i would just paint it myself at home with some spray paint. i'd still take care to tape off the lines and remove trim but i wouldn't worry so much about the sanding or making it perfect. i like the chip guard on the bottom and hood though, i would do that on any terc. rust prevention is the biggest thing and chip guard works well against that.

if you've never sanded before, be sure to google it. the pros are nuts, spending WEEKS sanding, but f*ck that. just take their advice and use some common sense. two big points though:

- don't let your wife use super heavy grit sandpaper. mine did it once because she's impatient and it turned out like i thought it would: mega rough wherever she used it.
- thoroughly degrease the vehicle after sanding! i didn't and got tons of 'fish eye' all over the van that i had to re-sand and repaint. i don't know how i missed that.

there's some pics at the end of this thread of the van my wife and i painted: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5672&start=15

all great points. I think I am just going to hook up the spray gun in the garage and go to town! Normally I wouldn't even bother, but its seems like I want to take better care of the turdsmell since after the "accident" and the repair. I am thinking of taking her back to her original luster (silver, black and red pin stripes) but I am undecided. hmmmm, she would look good in a racing stripe! Question... are all Canadian chicks cool enough to wash a mid 80's grossly under powered station wagon in their Bikini's? If so I might need to relocate  I just stumbled on that thread. BEST THREAD EVER!!

ha! too funny. she actually took an entire photo album worth of those, they're awesome. she understands my love for this car, which makes her even hotter.

and incidentally, a few of her friends (who are also very hot) dig ron, and tercs in general, as well. once when the wife borrowed the car, her friend was so intrigued that she asked my wife if she could possibly "wield ron." i f*cking love that--not driving but WIELDING a tercel, like a mighty axe! so dope. i also know of one of my wife's friends hit it off with another board member from here so yes, it seems a disproportionate amount of canadian girls love terc-guys. get up here and indulge!
