Question - Emissions - Air Suction
I have an '85 auto 4wd tercel wagon, and parts of the "Air Suction" are missing. From the catalytic I have the Reed Valve and AS Filter, but from the filter I am unsure where this pipe connects. Can someone with an Auto transmission take a photo of this unit and post it? the AS (air suction) unit on the auto transmission comes into the engine compartment on the driver's side from the catalytic. Where does it end? This is what I need to know. Thanks!!

Re: Question - Emissions - Air Suction
As diagrammed in the FSM you attached. As the diagrams indicate, the 2WD has the reed valve next to the filter, whereas the 4WDs have it separated from the filter.
I take it you do not have the tube leading from the reed valve to the CC - does your CC have the little tube projecting from the side as in the photo? Only the Fed (USA)cars have this style of CC.
The OE setup has the tube welded to the CC. When I installed a new CC, I had to devise a new coupling.

Re: Question - Emissions - Air Suction
Thanks Archinstl, I was trying to be precise in my wording, and I will try again. I do have all of the unit coming from the CC to the reed valve to the filter, and from the filter I have part of the tubing running just forward of the cross member/motor support on the drivers side. It is this tubing which goes to nothing that I am trying to find. If the CC is the end of the unit, I am trying to find out where the unit begins. I greatly appreciate the help!ARCHINSTL wrote: I take it you do not have the tube leading from the filter to the CC

Re: Question - Emissions - Air Suction
The tube just runs from the filter forward to terminate under the alternator. It sounds like you have everything that is supposed to be there, it just ends in a cut-off tube forward of the engine mount. That all there is to it.
It sucks in air, via the reed valve that operates from the natural pulses of the exhaust, and feeds the air into the CC to break down the CO and unburned HCs. Not all CC have a fresh air inlet, some of the early ones like this one has it, some model cars do not. I hate the whole system because it is always in the way when I need to do heavy maintenance, clutch change, etc.
When I eventually do my 4age engine swap I will eliminate the air intake system since the new engine does not use it.

(thumbs up) thanks!! thought it was a bit abnormal, was hoping to see a photo, because it seems like the final pipe is plumed into something, but alrighty then!!!

Re: Question - Emissions - Air Suction
I attempted to take a photo for you, but was unable to get aything useful because of the clutter down there.
When I did the CC back in '05 (see above pix), I found insect fragments and flora in the reed valve (the value of the filter is - what?). The stubby pipe exiting the filter was short and came nowhere near the engine mount, so I presumed something was missing. I then took a length of rubber tubing and extended the pipe to end just next to the AC condenser, presuming this would block bugs and buds.
When I install the new exhaust system next Spring the whole air suction system will be eliminated and will just plug the little tube on the CC - if not eliminate the CC altogether (MO now has no emissions testing for pre-OBII cars).

Re: Question - Emissions - Air Suction
I realize this is "a bit" tardy, but I thought someone had posted some pix of this way back - and I found it whilst searching for something else. There are some good pix by lapsed member thebigbread and words by others:
