New here and a question regarding jammed AC controls

Post by My1985Tercel »

Hi everyone,

Great site. I'm new here. I have a 1985 Tercel 4x4 wagon :) .

The heating/cooling control lever is jammed to the point of being unusable. The vehicle is AC equipped. Yet, I can't test the AC. Of course, the ability to regulate either warm or cool temperature would be nice.

What is involved in rendering the lever useful?

I am a bit of a noob. So, I kindly ask for patience and detail.

Thank you.

Welcome to the Club! Where are you located?
This link has some good general info - and also three pix of a removed panel: http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... f=4&t=1743
Also check the (downloadable) FSM here, and in particular the AC section. Also check the AutoZone site: You can enter our car, and then access the Repair Guides - lots of good info, with real photographs. There is quite a bit more on the HVAC system than in the Toy FSM.

What you do is pull the panel out just enough to get access to the back and check things and lube well...also adjusting the cables.

There are some instructions from the Bentley manual...

If this doesn't work...then....?

When checking the cables move the levers back and forth to make sure that the various levers do not touch each other where the cable mount. I have come across several Tercels where the levers interfere with each other.

my wife's toyota pickup had a problem with its heater controls long ago. something in the speed control had messed up and the thing had melted and then the plastic hardened again so you couldn't move the lever and it was stuck on the '1' setting. i had to replace the entire heater controls (you can see them in the link tom posted), and even if your problem is just a bent arm or something needing lubing, you'll have to remove a whole bunch of screws to remove the glove box and plastic covers around the heater controls. sort of a pain but really easy. if you need to remove the heater controls entirely, just follow each cable to its end point and unhook it. you'll be able to pull the unit and its spider leg-like cables out and do what you need to then.
