New owner of an 86 SR5 4X4 Wagon

Post by Matt Starbuck »

Hi guys,
I just recently bought a 1986 Tercel SR5 Wagon with 308K on the clock. I am a car avid for sure, a big VW guys for many many years and courtesy of my wife been a loyal Toyota owner the last few years. We replaced our beloved 88' Camry wagon with 314K with this Tercel because of our need for 4WD in the mountains of Western Colorado. The Camry was in the family since 1990 with 60K on it, now that's dependability to say the least. We have (3X) 300K+ mile Toyotas in our immediate family here in Colorado.
The P.O did quite a bit of work to her before selling her to us.
He was a mechanic and built this car for his daughter who said it was "too old" for her to be seen driving to H.S in
The engine was replaced with a lower mile 3a engine, he rebuilt the head to factory spec, put all new seals and gaskets where she needed.
It's got a new Bosch starter, new alternator(my doing yesterday), new timing belt, new clutch, new hoses and belts under the hood.
Yesterday I replaced the tires with brand new 175/70/13 General Altimax Arctics studless snow tires so she's ready to rock through some serious conditions.
Future plans included a full set of new struts and shocks, a replacement windshield, an upgraded stereo system, a roof rack, a rear cargo cover, and window tint.

I'm hoping I can use this community to get another 300K out of here. I just wanted to say hello and I will see you around!!

Oh Yeah I paid $900 for her, which I feel is an excellent deal!
She's basically rust free, and even here in CO that is a difficult find!

Matt

it's interesting because i've only seen that colour on the '87 or '88s but those headlights are from the older models. curious.

looks great though, and definitely a good price!

welcome to the list!

Nice looking '86, an SR5 with factory alloys too! Nice save. Too many of these cars end up in the scarp yard because people think they are "too old".

lots of great threads on this site on doing both repairs and upgrades to these great 4x4 cars. You might want to look at the MR2 brake up grade that I wrote up, living in a hilly area it is easy to warp the stock front rotors.

So not only can we help you get another 300k out of it, we can also help you make it even better than stock.

Thanks guys!
I have been tooling around here, nice to see another group of guys/gals who dig the old rides.
I plan on doing lots of work to her to get her up to speed.
Weber carb is next on the list after a windshield.
I like the ability to upgrade stuff interested in the suspension and brakes next for sure!!
I will see you in the other forums for sure
Thanks for the nice welcome!!

Hello!
Another Colorado T4WD owner! Welcome.
These cars drive well in winter conditions. I run Hankook W409s on mine without studs, and those tires also work wonders in snow and ice. Best of luck, I hear the western slope is going to get buckets of snow this week!
