Re: Stereo Upgrade
of their old stuff, "rrroooaaarrr" is my fave! those lyrics:
so if you need religion
or a god to believe
so if you're a straight guy
in the high society
if you are a looser or just
a wimp.....
off and die
truly awesome. so boneheaded and true. i don't know war and pain, i should download it! i love other classic rock and other stuff too. the police are one of my faves, i saw them on their reunion tour a few years back and it was AMAZING. the cure, my bloody valentine, burt bacharach, kool keith... there's something from every genre worth checking out, i find. you just have to wade through some shit to find it usually.

Right on, I like all kinds of music these days, well almostdavidlucasbarnes wrote:i don't know war and pain, i should download it! i love other classic rock and other stuff too. the police are one of my faves, i saw them on their reunion tour a few years back and it was AMAZING. the cure, my bloody valentine, burt bacharach, kool keith... there's something from every genre worth checking out, i find. you just have to wade through some shit to find it usually.

You definitely should check War and Pain It is very different from their later stuff. I was just listening to it for the first time in a long time. It is so gnarly and weird it makes me laugh. I think it's kind of a sloppy masterpiece. Be warned though some people cannot handle it.

"The black cat awaits the witch!" lol
Here's what one guy said about it "Picture a Canadian, "Show No Mercy"-era Slayer mixed with bands like Frank Zappa and the Syd Barrett fronted Pink Floyd. This is what Mr. Bungle would've sounded like if they grew up in a backwoods trailer park, and listened only to bands like Celtic Frost and Venom. Weird as heck, and way ahead of it's time." The way the vocals flow they were obviously listening to Judas Priest too.
I worked on my Tercel a lil bit today. I went through the drive through the other night and felt like an idiot opening my door to get my food

I also ordered a Kenwood deck and some Polk db 401's for the front. The Harley guys say they're the best little 4 inch speakers you can get.

Re: Stereo Upgrade
yeah, the polk speakers were what were in the front of my car when i got it! i had never heard of them before though and the brand name is super lame so i though they must be garbage. i went to the local mega car stereo place and found some 4" speakers on sale so i grabbed them but when i swapped the old ones out they were of comparable weight. they were both pretty heavy which is usually a good indicator of the speaker magnet size and sound quality, and i honestly didn't notice much difference in the new ones. so i've got an extra set of polks now for when i blow the current guys.
that description of old voivod sounds bang-on, especially the part about mr. bungle only listening to CF and venom. it was a very different time then, hey? i have so much nostalgia for that shit.

Re: Stereo Upgrade
Actually I think Polk Audio has been around a long time, and is a pretty respected name in audio?
Are you maybe thinking of Pyle?

Re: Stereo Upgrade
no no, i mean polk. i had just never heard of them before and there was a stupid frog on the box the speakers came in so i thought it was some kind of fisher price "my first car speaker set" bullshit. their sound is definitely on par with the stuff packaged in evil-looking black boxes that all the gangstas put in their bling rides though so i have ample respect for polk now. sorry, i wasn't very clear in my previous post.
Re: Stereo Upgrade
http://dcgold.com/n69r-p-8.html is what I have. first put them in my fairing for my Harley. they sounded so good I put them in my terc. Now I need a radio so i can here them.....probably this one. http://www1.dealtime.com/xPO-Fusion-Dig ... -by-Fusion.
Re: Stereo Upgrade
Sorry to bump up an old thread but I was searching and was hoping you guys could recommend a good deck.
My 87 has an aftermarket Alpine, nice for the day but it is cassette and the display no longer lights up so i cant even figure out what station I am on/tune into.
This thing fits well and the original manual was even in the glove box, would like to find something newer with CD and maybe MP3 that will fit in the same spot without having to cut up the dash/plastic surround at all...something cheap as well!!
Any suggestions?

LOL, yes it did! My boyfriend and I are also into metal and death metal. And regarding a few of you guys that had firebirds when you were kids, my boyfriend still has his '77 Firebird. Black on black, with a big block Chevy pumping out 425 hp and 500 torque, naturally aspirated. I need to finish the engine on my '89 Trans Am so that it will run (bought w/out an engine), then the modding can begin.davidlucasbarnes wrote: god, i love metal and tercel talk. this forum just got way better.

warbstd, i'm in canada but i'm sure the same decks are available everywhere. i bought the cheapest deck i found at wal-mart (i'm ashamed of myself for shopping there but i admit it). it's a "dual" brand, is a cd player and has 1/8" and USB inputs on the face so you can easily plug in mp3 and ipod devices. it lacks any really detailed EQ-ing possibilities but the stock sounds are pretty good. i have all new 4" speakers up front, 6 and 1/2" in the back, and a 12" sub and it sounds deadly.
starbug, i don't know where the threads are but some of the other board members and i have discussed metal at great length here. one guy sent me an old voivod album i hadn't heard yet and it's amazing! it's great to know how many terc enthusiasts are also metal enthusiasts.

Re: Stereo Upgrade
I was really surprised to read the posts on this thread about metal. I really didn't think there would be many (if any at all!) fans of it here. I'll have to do a search for the metal threads you mentioned and see what others have said. What was the name of the Voivod album the guy sent you?davidlucasbarnes wrote:

Re: Stereo Upgrade
it was war and pain, which was their first album. i've been into almost everything of theirs except that one, killing technology, and dimension hatross but war and pain still sounds very different to what i know of them. it's got an exceptionally youthful and energetic sound, very punk. that's the beauty of voivod, always changing from album to album.
i can't remember all the guys on here who are into metal but i know emmahumpfritter is down with all kinds of violence. he plays drums in a few bands that he's posted links to videos of.

Re: Stereo Upgrade
This is what I should have done. I live in a pretty high crime area, and have to park on the street. I have had my car broken into numerous times, and my previous car stolen. Just the other day somebody broke a side window to break in and destroyed my deck trying to take it out. Argggh, maybe if they had seen an el cheapo deck they would have passed on by my tercel? At least they didn't dig into my speakers.davidlucasbarnes wrote:i bought the cheapest deck i found at wal-mart (i'm ashamed of myself for shopping there but i admit it). it's a "dual" brand, is a cd player and has 1/8" and USB inputs on the face so you can easily plug in mp3 and ipod devices. it lacks any really detailed EQ-ing possibilities but the stock sounds are pretty good.
I am gonna put a booty looking cheap deck in there this time.

Re: Stereo Upgrade
My brother had this problem all the time, he always liked nice sounds in his car. I told him just put a cheap one in, and stop the thefts. He had hard riveted the stereo to the under dash, so they never got it, but they always broke open the windows, doors, locks, etc. Even took a pry bar to the dash once, ruined the dash but never got the stereo.
He made a fake face plate with two fake round knobs (bought at radio shack) that read "Odisco AM radio" (he used a label maker so it looked like production graphics) and he would mount it over the front of the Stereo. It was a shallow metal cover, like a small shoe box lid, with the face plate of an Am radio mounted on it, the label and the two knobs. He never had a break in again.
Later he found someone that made such a decoy AM radio cover sold in a car stereo shop, all plastic. looked great, but if you looked close you could tell it was fake.

Re: Stereo Upgrade
Awesome, I might have to resort to something like that? That reminds me of a friend years ago who had his high end stereo in the glove box, and a kraco double knob cassette mounted in the dash. Crappy speaker grills over his good speakers, amp under the seat. Looked like junk, but sounded great. A sleeper stereo.Petros wrote:He made a fake face plate with two fake round knobs (bought at radio shack) that read "Odisco AM radio" (he used a label maker so it looked like production graphics) and he would mount it over the front of the Stereo. I've been looking at the cheaper decks. Most of them are designed to look flashy, even though they're cheap. Problem is, the caliber of thief that does this might not know the difference?
I'm looking at the double din eclipse again. It's large and plain looking, it looks like a newer factory stereo. It's made by a good company, and should fit the tercel nicely.

Probably not as effective as a fake face plate, or a double knob kraco, lol. But it might just be big and plain enough to get them to pass on by?

Re: Stereo Upgrade
you can pick up old double knob radios at the wrecking yard, 2nd hand stores and even pawn shops, cheap. Use it to make your decoy. It is fairly common around Seattle to mount the nice stereo under the seat, and leave the factory radio (or a blank plate) in the dash. In the glove box is common too, but I would hate to loose the storage area.
