Contacts for Ski resort jobs in Canada/USA

Post by Mattel »

Hi North Americanos,

I know a few of you get up to the snow/ski fields in your trusty little cars.

I've recently had a personal tragedy in my life that has basically wiped out my responsibilities and now need a little time away while university is on four month break.

I'm looking for any sort of job in the snowfields in USA, Canada or Japan. I have both an EU and Australian passport and experience doing all sorts of things.

If anyone has any contacts that can possibly help please get in touch. I'm not having much luck with recruitment people as they consider me on the wrong side of 30/over-experienced and Work Visas can be hard to work out.

Anyway, just thought I'd put it out there

Cheers,
Matt

Start looking at a town called FERNIE it is in the interior of british columbia and is the best Snowboarding I have ever done (POWDER HEAVEN). I say Fernie because the population is about 50% australian in the winter. Chances are that the people you would be applying to would be australian aswell :D Good luck in the search but I would definitely keep my search focused on British Columbia. Great skiing great, People and some of the most breath taking views in the world. Try whistler/Blackcomb as-well because the coast mountains are amazing too. Also Mt. Washington (my Local mountain) is a great resort, Located on beautiful Vancouver Island just outside of a town called courtney. Hope all of this helps. 8)

Here is a website that My good friend had success with. http://www.jobsinfernie.com/

and here is one posting I saw from just browsing http://www.jobsinfernie.com/?q=node/1415

Hi Barto,

Thanks a lot for that site, I'll have a good look at that site. There seems to be quite a lot of positions posted on it. I'm kinda keen to get away from Aussies to be honest but that looks like a great starting spot and you are right that there might be some bias helping me get job if the bosses are Aussies too. Vancouver Island sounds great. My neighbour went there last year and told me how amazing it is you guys are lucky in a lot of ways! Colorado resorts sound pretty crazy as well.

Cheers, Matt

Don't know what you are looking for; not too many seasonal jobs at ski areas for executive-types, but there are always plenty of other jobs, from accounting/auditing to ski shop salespeople. Skilled laborers, like electricians and heavy equipment mechanics, are always in demand, and pay very good wages-- but most seasonal jobs are service related, i.e. lift operators, cooks, waiters, janitorial staff, bus drivers, parking lot attendants, hotel staff, etc. If you can ski or board reasonably well there is also the possibility of instructing, although if you are not a certified instructor the pickings are pretty much limited.
I am a ski patroller at a Colorado resort, a volunteer nowadays, but did it as full time employment for many years. Loads of fun.
Age of applicant is not generally an issue, but you should know that seasonal labor is not generally very highly paid, although some resorts assist with housing and meals to some extent.
Best of luck!

Thank you Hberdan for that,

Just finished Uni on Monday and I think I might have just scored a job in Niseko, Japan.. Only problem is that it is for a 18 months! 16meters of snow each season. I'll start scouring the yards for some Caribs to send over to you if it all comes through.

That colorado site looks real interesting though. Thanks heaps for the contacts I might still apply for some of those jobs if Japan doesn't come through.

Cheers!
