OH NOES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Krunk »

I sprayed my engine and compartment down with de-greaser, then carefully sprayed it off with the hose being careful not to hit electrical parts. The next day I started it and it idles kinda funny, then eventually didn't want to start at all, turns over fine, I have gas and I am getting gas, I am not getting spark, I sanded the points on the cap and rotor, thinking I must have destroyed my coil.....could it be something else? what am i missing? how much of an idiot am i? new coil on rock auto is $17 bucks but a new dizzy is $170 what gives?
I told my wife the other day "Men will always buy a car/truck, spend more money on it then its worth(loving every minute of it) and then sell it for less then they spent on it, ITS WHAT WE DO!" There is nothing you can do.

Now that it's night, start it up and look for spark leaking out of the plug wires.

Was the cap dry inside?

I've had 2 coils fail at right around 200k. 17 bucks is super cheap compared to napa or oreily's.

So I replaced the plugs(NGK) and wires(DURALAST****), changed oil with penns 10-w40 new fuel filter. All my vacuum lines look like **** so going to go buy like 20' tomorrow and replace them all, I am not getting any spark from the coil, opened everything up to let it dry out tonight, going to try to re-sand points tomorrow, coil is $42 down the street at autozone, wondering if It is the coil or something else ..... looks like whoever owned this car took good car of it, alternator is a reman same with starter, all electrical connections look brand new nothing cracking, the harmonic balancer is new also. There was condensation in the cap....and moisture in the housing, I think it needs a new rotor seal anyways so I will pull it out an rebuild it asap. Just sucks, I should have let it dry my customary 3 days after a compartment clean....I was just so excited....

take some moisture displacing spray like LPS or CRC, tuner cleaner, and spary it all over the wires, your connectors, and inside the distributor. IT will displace the moisture and it will start right up. Since it is wet most of the year around here I carry this stuff in my car with me.

If you put a lamp near the open distributor overnight it also might dry it out enough to get it to run.

don't start replacing parts until you know what is wrong, sound like moisture got in somewhere it should not.

Good luck

Yeah for sure, just if I started it up with moisture in the cap more then likely its toast due to a short. I sprayed the whole compartment with crc, carefully spraying electronic type shit. I was getting no spark to my plugs, we will se in the morning, chances are it will just start up pretty common when you get things wet, lets hope I didnt melt something.

Do you have a meter? To check the coil, all it takes are some pretty simple ohm measurements as outlined in the FSM.

this pretty much says it all for compatable front strusts for a 4wd, that is a gabriel part number for a 83 front strut assembly. You can do this with any part, simply search for a part on rockauto for your car, then click on the part number and it will show you all other cars it works for.
