What is the "intermediate steering link?" There is nothing by that name in the FSM, the EPCs in this Parts forum or on a dealer's site.
To confirm that it is NLA - send an email to Dan Egan at toyoemparts@butlerauto.com .
While I always trumpet Butler in Indy, it has come through when some unnamed STL Toy dealers have told me several parts were NLA. Tell him Tom in STL sent you (no lollipops, but it keeps them aware that there are T4WD folks out here). It also has the best OE prices by far.
But check the EPCs/FSM here first for the correct description.

its a solid shaft with a U joint on the steering shaft.. approx 15 inch long. Mine is frozen in one direction, so the car steers very hard and clunky

At the ToyotaPartsZone website http://www.toyotapartszone.com/genuine/ ... parts.html
it's called the SHAFT SUB-ASSY, STEERING MAIN -- "no longer available"
Part # 210-16050 (for 1982.08-1984.08 T4WD)
EDIT: the correct part # is 45210-16050

as suggested by Tom, submit a parts inquiry to Butler Toyota & see what comes up

Couldn't find much info on the forum about this part

in one thread -- http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... f=3&t=5435 -- there were a couple suggestions that may make the joint last longer or work more freely
for example:

"...the steering u-joint, they are supposed to be sealed, but they will wear out eventually. Sometimes even freeze up. some have suggested soaking it in penetrating oil to make it last longer."

"The joint has sealed bearings...but they can be lubed with light oil. They can get dry and stiff...and/or they can get loose...then they need replacement. If you hit them with light oil every 6 months or so....they might last indefinitely.
On some years...they used the same joint for the power steering as with manual steering....manual steering causing more joint stress...more failure.
Takes very minor looseness in that joint to make your steering sloppy."

My steering u-joint has started binding. A little Silicone spray has helped, but not solved.

I replaced mine several years ago...same year wagon...found a used one off a hatchback. http://www.car-part.com/

But mine was loose...not DRY.

You can save yourself some money and effort by using a light oil on the joint...this will usually free them up....then reapply every 3-6 months...should last indefinitely.

I'd try the light oil treatment first. Failing good results with oiling it, most good driveline shops can rebuild that part for you. The driveline shop i use likes challenges like that.

On my 84 with power steering I just put a whole 85 or 86 column in. 85 and up have a u-joint coupler that is designed a little different and is still available, if needed. Fairly cheap too.

It was plug and play. Also gained tilt in the process.

I did remove the u-joint from my "new" column and boiled it in synthetic gear oil. The smell was awful.

Also, SR5 without power steering? Seems strange unless it was just a first year thing.

Not sure if the columns interchange between p/s and non p/s. Unless someone else here knows you will have to do your homework.

Been calling junk yards the last two days (car-parts.com ) and nobody has it. Had one sent last week that was two short... Car been sitting at repair shop for two weeks now.

Are the later years 85+ a bolt in to the old cars? perhaps a entire column swap if I can get one that will fit.

Car says its a sr5 with badge... but no power steering.

The newer columns should fit. In my 84 it bolted in just fine inside and out and the electrical plugged right in.

I would think the biggest factor will be the bottom end of the column with p/s vs. non p/s.

OT, but - my then-new '83 SR5 (Oct. '82 build) did not have PS - I cheaped out on the option.

I'm going to chime in and say that I have two 84 SR5s that lack power steering and one 83 DLX without it either. My dad used to own an 83 SR5 that didn't have power steering. Therefore, I would assume that a good number of the early 83-84 models were built with the option omitted.

My '83 is an SR5 and has manual steering. I also bought a shorter universal and shaft from a former member before I found the one I put in.

Drop that old part in some light oil and get it flexing OK...and put it back in?
