Temps are Soaring
I do not know what is happening to my baby. My engine temps are going crazy. I've near overheated twice but when I rev the engine it cools off a bit. I see no weep holes on the water pump, and it doesn't appear to be a stuck thermostat (I bought a Fail-Safe?)
Any suggestions?

Is the electric fan working? Coolant levels? Rad clean?
Maybe the water pump is going...that would explain why revving it lets it cool down. It's possible that the water is not circulating properly through the rad.

I had my cooling fan go out about a month ago.....the car was sitting at idle, and I'd gone back in the house for something. I got distracted, and when I came out about 10minutes later, there was steam everywhere and the temp gauge was pegged out . I had to relace the radiator since the top cap had cracked. Luckily , it doesnt' appear that the engine sustained any damage. I hope nothing shows up over time.
I finally got the fan turning with some lubticant, but it wouldn't keep working, so I got one at the junkyard and replaced it . Ultimately found out that a previous owner had taken the fan relay out and bypassed it with a wire.
Does your car have to be moving for it to cool down ?? or does it cool down when sitting still, just with revving the engine?? If it takes the car moving, then it most likely is an air flow issue, if it takes engine RPM's , then I'd say more likely a circulation issue.

The issue happens at any time. My fan is fine, it spins great. I don't think there is a flow issue, unless it is in the block. Perfect time for a good backflush? The radiator was just cleaned with a good flushing. Thermostat works and was installed in the proper position. I check my coolant every time I open the hood.... At least every other day. How difficult and exopensive is it to rebuild a water pump if that is the issue? How hard is it to just take apart and check the impellar?
Today it slipped up high enough to cause boiling overflow, which ticks me off.

Try starting the car cold with the cap off and coolant visible...if you see bubbles at idle or reving it up...you probably have a head gasket leak...exhaust into coolant.

Didn't try revving it up but on the first part I'm a few steps ahead of you.
Another note- I've been mysteriously loosing coolant.... Oil looks pure and I see no weep holes in the pump, no leaks on the side of the block, no hose leaks... Hence the mysterious part. I'll go check under rev right now.

Sounds familiar...exhaust into coolant...coolant into exhaust......good thing is that this car would be relatively easy to do a head gasket job on.
If you take the plugs out and find one that has been steam cleaned...that should confirm the diagnosis?

Yet again, she started overheating.. AND IT'S 30 DEGREES OUTSIDE! After she cools down I'm going to check to see if this thermostat is fried (if it is I'm gonna be pissed, though I hope its as little an issue as that) and I dunno how I'll be able to check the water pump without having to buy new seals and gaskets... and on bloody Christmas eve!

Ah-HAH! I found the culprits! A not-fully tightened thermostat housing and a faulty radiator cap! At least, for the 10 miles I drove, it seemed to solve the problem?

Hope so...cause every time you get it too hot..you probably shorten the life of the head gasket. Good luck.......Typrus wrote: Ah-HAH! I found the culprits! A not-fully tightened thermostat housing and a faulty radiator cap! At least, for the 10 miles I drove, it seemed to solve the problem?

If you keep jumping those darned ditches.....?
Might find one of those places that will check out your front end and so forth for free...let them show you any LOOSE parts on the front...but be sure they SHOW you the looseness....have no doubt they will find something.
Probably a tire that's out of balance....or older tire that is out of round...combined with a loose tie-rod end?
You COULD have NO loose parts on the front and it would still jump around if out of balance.
I have tires on the front with around 10K miles on them and if I spin the right side front in the wet...you can feel that it is out of round....doesn't jump at 50-60 though.
Hope you get your car fixed before you run into something.............
