Installing the ball joints/CV Joints

Post by gerviswaddell »

Hi there, A search proved only marginally useful on this particular query.

I am installing new Balljoints and CV Joints, and need to know how to raise the steering knuckle (and compress the spring) in order to allow all of the parts to fit together...(ball joint lower taper in, and splined cv tip in)

I have been trying with a jack, but the shock is able to move too much in either direction (it basically deflects) I also tried connecting the tie rod to hold it steady, but there was still too much movement. What alternatives do I have? Is a spring compressor necessary?

thanks again,

GW

You don't raise the knuckle. You flex the lower control arm down. A large prybar on top of the sway bar works well.

AS Splatterdog says- personally I (being light) find its easier for me if I sit (or just apply load by sitting) on the pry bar. that leaves both of my hands free to maneuver the strut onto the balljoint and engage the splines of the axle.

like the others, I have always done it with a pry bar by pushing down on the lower arm. The inner bushing is a bonded rubber doughnut that has some spring to it, and it will flex down far enough to allow you to get the ball joint in place.

Good luck.
