Can not get the transmission out. Any suggestions on what I need to do to get it all the way out.

is it an automaticShawnee2010 wrote:Oh guess I forgot a few things LOL IT is a 1983 4x4 tercel wagon
if so you have to get some bolts off the torque converter in gap between bell housing and engine
tranny will come out then without damaging torque converter
if its manual it should come out once shifter is removed and rear tranny mount is disconnected
oil pan should rest on steering rack to get maximum angle downward
have to push rear of tranny up
getting tranny back in is easier if you remove input shaft first
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

It has to have the throw out bearing replaced.

Re: Trying to take transmission out
We found this for my son who is in college and took it to MN after Christmas. We even got it right before Christmas for $500. He has not said anything about noise but he traveled to MN and then home in Nevada for summer. It will be taking him to North Dakota for new college. We thought how great for snow. He had trouble with it going to MN in IA. He ended up putting a new motor from junk yard from MN and then had a broke pulley that we found one here at pick and pull and he replaced that. Before leaving it had to have CV joint replaced on drivers side and struts replaced. When he drove it home it did very well until about 30 miles from home. My dad is thinking the noise in the transmission is the throw out bearing. I can say when I tested it I would of taken it for myself. I got to test it in snow. Sold us with him being in cold and snow country.

Re: Trying to take transmission out
There is this really annoying 10mm bolt that only holds on the end of the water heater tube. The bolt is on the right side under the intake/exhaust manifold and goes through the backing plate into the bell housing. You can not get the trans free with it in place because the backing plate is bolted to the back of the block.
Also, sometimes it appears there is not enough clearance to allow the trans to move far enough back before it will clear the input shaft. I have seen it happen a few times, usually the trans will just fall out as you wiggle it backwards. If it hangs up on the tunnel, you can try to get more clearance by unbolting the front cross member (the one that holds the steering rack and engine mounts) and lower it about an inch or so. No need to unbolt everything from the cross member, all you need to do it lower it a little bit to get more clearance.
good luck.
