those are MR2 wheels. They sell on E-bay for $150 each! Worth as much as the car. I wonder what "rear axle work" means, bearing?

i dunno. could be a shit show in the back end but i've emailed the seller to get some details. i'll take a look and if the other side is as clean as the driver's side i just might go for it. god knows 4 vehicles in the yard of a 2-person household just isn't enough. i could pull the sr5 seats and dash from the same car i pulled my inclinometer and roof rack off of...

Unless the car is otherwise in near perfect condition, the price seems bit high for needed a major repair. Buy carefully.

sunray, when you say it's perfect do you mean it's perfect for you, or perfectly f***ed?

did you take a look at it? i just got an email from the seller and she says it's just the passenger side bearing. she also said the gas tank overflows when full, so i want to know if it leaks from the cap, filler neck, or the tank itself. between replacing a gas tank a bearing, i would turn down this poor thing. or make a ridiculously low offer.

It turns out both rear axle bearings are blown. The tank overflows from the cap only. I'm a techician so its no big deal for me. For average joe, the rear bearings alone are about $500-600 worth of repair. Its not driveable where it sits.

if the bearings are blown out, you might want to remove the diff 3rd member and flush out any shavings from the axle housing, and refill with fresh gear oil. It sounds like new axles seals are in order as well.

Overflowing fuel tank is easy fix, usually it is either a bad gas cap (the check valve in the cap more specifically) or the vent solenoid at the canister. This occurs when the a full tank fuel expands, and has nowhere to vent to when the carbon canister vent system is not working.

sunray, are you going to take it? she said some one is coming to look at it on saturday, i said if it doesn't go to let me know and i'll take a look. i def won't pay $500 for it but if she takes an offer it would be a fun project car for the fall.

any rust on the other side? i bet there is, she probably just took a photo of the nice side. i'd do the same.

I left her a deposit as she is out of town starting today until next week. When seh returns I'm going to take it to my shop and pull both axles to ensure there isn't more damage. Being that these cars use an S code diff which has the cartridge brg and collar I expect they are fine. The seals are also located inside on the collar so I don't expect much debris either. If it all looks fine I will give her the price. If its needing some axles or a housing then I wil be giving a much lower offer.

If i don't take it I will be sure to post a head up for you guys to have a look.

Both front fenders have bubbling around the arches. There is one small square hole at the right arch near the door, and the right rear quarter way down low has a hole. Overall its a solid body still. The right steering rack boot is non-existent, the distributor o-ring leaks, the cam seal and valve cover both leak. The right front window slips out of the regulator and the hatch lock cylinder is stiff. Slight stumble at idle but there is some silver lining. All new struts, shocks, and brakes.

For me, its all simple and cheap to fix. Its made even easier on a hoist. In my spare time I build Toyota race cars so this is pure utilitarian bliss.

wow, i'm envious of your hoist! my vw project is up on stands right now and i try not to breathe too much around it for fear of being crushed.

if it's that hooped i'll pass on it, and if it's an easy job for you than i'm happy for you. like i said, the wheels and roof rack are so sweet even on their own! let us know how it comes together.

That sounds about average for what you find in one of these cars. All are fairly easy fixes, there is just always so many of them! I recently picked up an '86 with a blown rear diff, after I fixed that I discovered a long list of similar minor issues (still not done yet). Fortunately I got it cheap enough I am not too concerned, but the amount of hours to get it all fixed is really adding up.

Are you going to gut one of your Tercel4wd to make into a rallycross car? These would make a great platform for that if the rules allow major changes to the engine (way underpowered). I thought it might be fun to take a rust-bucket Tercel to build into a rally car, a real junk yard (rat rod type) racer.
