Hi there,
Going to be swapping my transmission (doing a clutch job soon, just going to switch in the better trans now, rather than wait until later.) When I removed the donor transmission, I had trouble getting it out in once piece (ie transmission, bell housing + diff all together) so I removed the trans first, then the rest of it.
When I look at the FSM I see that there is a gasket in between the trans and transaxle. Do I need this gasket or will silicone do?
I spoke to a transmission guy today, and he assured me that silicone would do the trick, but I'm still not convinced. Should I get this part from the dealer? or just go with silicone.
thanks again,
GW

Re: Transmission gasket?
Silicone is kind of risky in this case. You would have to clean and dry things and keep them that way, no oil dripping out while installing. One spot of oil and silicone doesn't stick. You also have to be carefull to apply the right amount. Too little-leaks, too much and excess can plug things if edges that push out break off. I recommend "right stuff" over any other silicone if you go that way.
The gasket is likely cheap, but probably not in stock. That would be preferable IMO. All the wiggling that is needed to install this trans could wipe off liquid sealants. Not to mention gear oil takes years to stop dripping.
Make absolutely sure all the old gasket is gone either way.

Re: Transmission gasket?
I put a used trans in using the same old gasket that had a split in one place but was intact otherwise. Used a non-hardening gasket sealer. Did have some slight leaking...but snugged the bolts up a couple of times and it OK now.
Think somebody said they paid $24 for this gasket...thin as hey too.
I think the old type of gas and oil resistant gasket goop would work best IF you coated both sides with it and let it dry fairly well first...problem is having it get scraped or getting oil on it like was mentioned.
What would be really neat would be ruining a $24 paper thin gasket?

Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.

Re: Transmission gasket?
well, there is a Toyota dealer just down the street, turns out the gasket is only $8.00, so I went for it. thanks for the precautions, I never even thought of pieces of silicone getting caught up inside] the trans, so thanks again.
