Good advice on reconditioning these things. I thought that I might keep the old one too, but the core charge on the thing was over forty dollars, so I just got my money back.

Despite that, I'm gonna put in a good word for O'Reilly Auto Parts, the new name for Checker. Since the name change they get shipments from the big city more often, in my case twice a day from Albuquerque, and their computer system is amazing, with multiple photos of many parts to view. They put the local Pep Boys to shame!

why didn't you just measure the voltage of the output of the alternator? While its running, attach voltmeter to to positive (+) and negative (-) sides of the battery, then see what the meter says. It should read around 14.1volts. If it reads 12, it won't charge.
