Which Clutch? Rockauto

Post by gerviswaddell »

Hey there,

I am going to be doing a clutch job and am looking to order from rockauto, any idea which clutch would be best? I am looking at the kits here:

-SACHS Part # KF61302

-EXEDY Part # 16039 {Disc mm: 190; Disc In: 7-1/2; Splines Dia: 1; Splines: 21}

-RHINOPAC Part # 16039

-BECK/ARNLEY Part # 0619144

-BRUTE POWER / PERFECTION CLUTCH Part # 92062A

-ACDELCO Part # 381689

I am not sure about the quality associated with these various brands.
Any input would be greatly appreciated,

i recently did the Brute power 92062a from rock auto
the quality of the parts looked great but the pressure plate was not moving enough
so i sent it back to rockauto and the sent another 92062a kit
this time i tested it before install (i did write up on this earlier this year)
while waiting for it to be delivered i picked up the same kit at o'reillys and installed it with no problem
the clutch disc looked very high quality on this kit
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

I see,

should I be worried about the fit issue that you had? It will be much more painful for me to send this back (Im in Canada), am I risking it with this kit? would this inconsistency not be an indication of poor mfg quality?

any other brands people had good luck with?

I've had a Beck/Arnley clutch from RA in my car for the last 6 months with no complaints. Before that my Tercel had a Luk clutch set which also worked good. I put a Sachs clutch in my old BMW with favorable results. I believe Sachs is OEM for some European manufacturers.
It's a scientific fact that in a twin engine aircraft, when one engine fails there is always enough power in the remaining engine to make it all the way to the crash site.

I have used Sachs for an old Volvo I owned many years ago (it is OEM for Volvo), it held up well and they have a good reputation. I have no experience with it in Japanese cars.

Although Beck Arnley has had a good reputation in the past, I have had serious defect issues with other Beck Arnley parts for my Tercel(s) in the last few years. So much so I am leery of anything else they sell now. The store clerk said they have also been having issues with returns of Beck Arnley as well. I do not know if it is related to all of the other problems in the US car industry, or if they have just gone down hill.

I went with the Factory Toy clutch, fit perfect with no issues and no worries.
And it is not rebuilt, all new and balanced individually.
It wasn't that expensive and there was no guess work.'

Make sure you replace the pilot and throw-out bearings while you are in there, you will be glad you did. (the pilot bearing is most likely original as nobody like to change them, something about being hard to get out, it really isn't hard at all but does take a little extra time.)

When I did mine, I pulled the engine and did the timing belt at the same time, just seemed like a good idea, oh I might also have done engine mounts too, and perhaps a water pump , maybe a few other things....

My wife has accused me of being Obsessive/Compulsive, I prefer the term practical.

I presume you got it from a Toy dealer in Canada? ... How much was it? ... Was it a complete kit or à la carte?

Sorry Tom but I can't remember the price, I try really hard not to look at that part of the equation.
Everytime I check a price on-line (US info) I get sick as it is usually 1/2 of what I have to pay.
I think it is the "Polar bear repellent fee" that makes the difference.
Seems to me, at the time, it was not horrendous, when compared to a CDN A/M assembly.
Toy doesn't sell kits. Pressure plates, discs, bearings all come separate.
I actually like this approach.
Years ago, at the speed shop, we had an awful time with A/M parts in clutch land, discs that had too much material on them, PP that had weak fingers, some just had impossible drive-line vibrations, some of course were fine but it only takes a few bad ones to learn a lesson.
We got into the habit of using OE stuff unless it was a competition application.
