Location of HCV?

Post by danzo »

On page 148 of the FSM there's a slackluster drawring depicting the Heat Control Valve. I can't find it on my car - can anyone clue me in/post a pic? It's a bimetallic spring valve that directs coolant into the intake manifold. I just wanted to check mine to see if it's faulty and causing pinging. I guess I could always override it, but of course I need to find it first. I don't even know if car has one, as it's possible US Fed models sold in the south may have deleted it.

Thanks in advance.

Read on down the thread - a long time ago I had a tough time finding it as well: http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... alve#p7453.
And:
http://www.tercel4wd.com/forums/viewtop ... trol+valve
It's pretty elusive...
It directs exhaust gas from the inside of the exhaust manifold towards the inside bottom of the intake manifold; the Tercel does not use water for heating the manifold (Thank Goodness!).
From AutoZone's site:

Note that it tells one to "Check the operation..." I don't know HTH this is done without: A) Burning your loong, skinny, fingers, or B) having a camera on a flex tube with a claw attached...

I think this is the flapper valve in the exhaust manifold that direct exhaust gases to the under side of the intake manifold directly below carb. You can feel it by reaching behind the exhaust manifold (engine cold!) just above the head pipe flange, there is a short lever with a weight and a bi-metal coil on it. It should swing freely through about 90 deg. of rotation.

The intake manifold on this car does not have any water passages in it, there is an electrically heated plate under the carb, and the bi-metal strip controlled flapper valve in the exhaust manifold. Most modern cars have to have some way to heat the intake manifold around the throttle plate to prevent ice formation in cold damp weather.
