suspension mods?

Post by caveman »

I just got my new to me 1985 tercel 4wd wagon.
LOVE this rig.
I normaly spend most of my time 4wheelin in mini trucks. Always loved the wagons with 4 wheel and the EL 4.7 gear in the 6 speed tranny.
Finally found one on craigs for 300. It has a steel bumper trailer hich, and a webber carb(barf). I have an inclimeter on the way from ebay. :)

My question is this, what can i do to improve the suspension travel. I dont need a lift, i would be ok with 1-2 inches though.
Just looking for something more beefy for high speed fire roads ect.

What stuff is available? Are there any secret part numbers i can bring to autozone to get some monroes or something that will work or any aftermarket company that offers a rally style suspension for this rig?

After the 3ac blows another head gasket I plan on dropping in a 4age with rear axel ect. SO i am looking to do some fairly serious high speed rally style driving.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

hey man. barto from this forum has tried a few suspension mods and helped me put springs from an '87 pathfinder and shocks from an '80 ford t-bird in the back end. this jacked the back up about 3-4" and it rides WAY smoother now. for the front bart used strut springs and the spring hat from a 4-cylinder camry, anything between '82-'91 fits. i haven't put these in mine yet but he loves it, says it jacks the front up 2" and improves cornering and handling over washboard a lot.

hope that helps. use the search function and look up engine swaps, there are a few really good threads for a couple different motors. i just put a 4AC in mine so i could keep the weber and not have to dick around cutting the firewall and it was pretty straightforward. also look up barto's big thread in the gallery section, there are lots of pics there for in suspension upgrades.
