Help timing belt alignment!!!!!

Post by Trev »

I'm replacing the head gasket and didn't make any marks on the timing belt or pully (cam gear?) before removing it. So, how do I align them so it will run?

I'm very confused and I'm content on getting it running tonight. Stupid FSM doesn't seem to state anything...just says how you should mark it.

Ok looks like I put engine on TDC (compression stroke) then align cam gear with the mark and the hole then just slip the timing belt on and I'm good to go?

Is that it?

Did you see pages em11-em13? Little hole in cam sprocket is straight up in relation to the head. A notch or bulge on the head should be viewable thru the center of the hole, centered. The crank has a notch and the oil pump housing has a notch or bulge at about 1:00-2:00.

I have never marked it, always used the marks on the sproket and lower pulley as Splatterdog states. Works just fine.

Wow it was so simple. I finally got the balancer/pulley off and I saw the line and the little dot. I then noticed the cam sprocket and the hole with the arrow/triangle. I slipped the belt on, and then turned the car over by hand a dozen times and checked it four times and the cam is on the mark the same time the crankshaft is on the mark too. Meaning it is aligned.

Its very hard to describe these things. lol
