Non-active member fingers did a trans switch and really detailed it - look in Repair Guides. I'm pretty sure at least one more member did it, but I do not recall his name. I'd suggest a Search.
Making one into an SR5 is not too difficult, given the parts, save maybe for the side trim - if that's important.

Even if the car was free it is not worth it. Converting to an SR5 is not so bad, but I would not mess with a trans swap. The trans could cost as much as finding a complete car with the manual trans anyway, so why bother.

Only get it if you want an auto trans, the manual trans are still available in this area if you are willing to drive up to 8 hours to get it. Search craigs list. There is really nice '83 SR5 with factory alloys and a sunroof right now in Oregon for only $300, it just needs a clutch.

You need access to cheap parts in a wrecking yard if you want to do an SR5 up grade, you will need the instrument cluster and the seats (most important parts). The external trim is more work but less important. But unless it is real cheap, you can find SR5 versions still for pretty good price if it needs some mechanical work (way easier than doing a trans swap). Be patient, and you will find what you want.

I've seen a bunch of them in my area . We always wave to each other when we pass  . I still have both my 84 & 85 and just picked up a 86 with 160 thou on it . Needs a headgasket but it's got one of the straightest bodies I've seen in a long time .

I should add: One time some many years back, I saw a blue 83-86ish Tercel 4wd at a local storage facility near a mall near me: the NATICK MALL or NATICK COLLECTION as it might also be called... :D There was an older guy with glasses driving it and a son, I think, helping him out...There was also a 1986-7 T4WD for sale in Taunton, MA for $1500 but it was a stick shift model... Couldn't get it but it was closer to me than the Cranston, RI one I still currently have! :)

There is a really clean '86 SR5, w/factory alloys and factory sun roof in an impound yard near my work,. I drive by it every day, stopped to ask when there will be an auction, next one is Aug 8th. If no one redeems the Tercel from the impound, I will be there that day. Even if the engine and trans were trashed, it would be an excellent buy for the good body and interior alone.

Cars auctioned out of impound this old typcially only sell for $100 to $300, even if in running condition! Well worth rescuing.

Perhaps when it comes to Tercel4wd, you are correct. And there are many natural splendors to enjoy from the T4wd as well. But there is trouble in paradise, this state is run by a number of real incompetents.

i'm sure you're right, petros, but most places are. oh well, washington and oregon are both BEAUTIFUL states, we plan on doing a lot more road-tripping throughout both of them. long beach and snoqualmie were a few faves in WA and camping on the dunes of the oregon coast was unreal too. lots of sad little towns that are drying up, i love those places. i always wonder about the history of them.

@ Petros,

Hope you get the one at auction.

And yes, we are spoiled in the PNW, when it comes to T4WD. I didn't really realize it till after I started this post.
