What's the best tranny lube?

Post by Meck »

Okay, I'm starting to get a little bit of a "rasp" when I shift in and out of 3rd gear, so I'm guessing synchronizers are starting to show some wear. I would like to delay the inevitable as long as possible since I'm on my last spare tranny and also like to avoid work as much as possible. Will one of these newer synthetic superlubes help with this problem? I've heard people mentioning off and on on this forum that they use something other than the factor-manual specified lube, but I can't find the discussions using the search function. What do you all use and recommend as a tranny lube? If there is a thread on this, please let me know how to find it. Thanks.

Redline 75-90 NS. Full synth. Shifts great.

Had you been running synth already, you might not be on your last trans!

I'm using Mobil 1 75W90 full synth...this is the stuff for LS diffs...but is OK for regular...also using 1 oz Tufoil per qt. Shifts just fine...general impression is slick and thinner...expect best results in winter. I still need to use the clutch...go figure. :P

I can see some grating now and then...usually because I get lazy and don't fully depress the clutch...the synth makes it easier to cheat.

I use Supertech 75W 90 ( Wal-Mart $10.00 a gallon ) with a 1/2 cup of mystery oil thrown in for good measure.

MOS2 extends the life of the trans. It fills in pits and bonds to the metal. Works as an additive or comes in the LubroMoly oil. I also use LubroMoly engine oil. I also use Lucus oil stabiliser, in engine, trans, and differential. It makes the oil stick to the parts to prevent cold start wearing. Other wise when the oil drains back down the internal parts are almost dry during cold start up until oil pressure builds up.
