leaking oil seal: transaxle to half-shaft
leaking oil seal: transaxle to half-shaft
On my '83, the gear oil is dripping out around the right half-axle. I can get an oil seal at Beaverton Toyota for $12. Is this accessible once I have the half-shaft out? Any tips about removing the old seal and positioning the new one? (I assume it would also be wise to replace the half-shaft while I have the old one out. I've done that before on my '85, no problem.) Thanks, David

Here's a thread that has good info & some pics. Read it all the way through... 5th post from the end has info specific to seal removal & installation.

I'm sure there's other relevant threads on this forum... the "Search" function here is pretty good and you should try using it to get more info.
Also, the FSM (Factory Service Manual, see link near the top of every page on this forum) has step-by-step procedures & drawings/diagrams.

Be SURE you get a seal that looks like this:
Well, I could not get the link to show the photo...
1. Go to http://www.beckcatalog.com/#
2. Enter the Tercel pertinent info and then on the drop-down menu, click on "transmission seals."
3. Click on # 052-3521 for a photo.
And DO review all of the info on mounting the seal. It can be tricky - particularly in getting it seated properly - I know...

I wouldn't replace the axle as a matter of course...due to the fact that you don't always get a good rebuilt one...so if the one you have is OK...espec if it happens to be original...keep it?

The repair was a complete success, thanks all! No more leak. I referred throughout to the procedures detailed in:

>>5th post from the end
I did replace the old half-shaft. The bearings did feel pretty tired once I had it out and compared it to the rebuilt.
