will it fit??

Post by matthewqwerty1 »

hi, i am in need of a passanger side half shaft for the rear axle. i am from the UK and there arnt any information on these cars over here as they are unusal

the car itself is a 1989 corolla 4wd estate its only covered 65,000 miles so it would be a shame to scrap it just because of a bent half shaft. i have been told they are the same both sides, and also that the half shafts or rear axle off a ae86 corolla will fit my car, it would be alot easier to get hold of a shaft or complete axle off one of them cars. do u know if this is true? if not is there any other cars that use the same rear axle as the corolla/tercel 4wd.

any information is great.

thanks matt.

Hey Matt,

Is that passenger side on a left hand or right hand drive? I know you drive RHD cars there but just want you to make sure everyone know what side you are talking about. We have many of the Corolla awd wagons in Australia if you have no luck with the Americanos there are some websites that I could email you.
good luck!

I think the postage will make this very expensive from Australia http://www.partsonline.com.au http://www.findapart.com.au/ but I think some of the corolla's before us has some similar rear axles and they should be a lot easier to hunt down over your end of the world but I am not 100% about this, there are also the french tercel forum members who also have your car and might be able to hunt down the piece if your french is any good. Good luck with it all!. Matt

If you look up an 1989 Corolla on this site (American)...you find only one rear axle listed for a 4x4 89.

** meant to say that looks like the ONLY Corolla with a rear axle shaft in '89 was the 4x4...rest had FWD?

http://www.car-part.com/

Many of them seem to be located in the northern US and Canada. Looks like '88 thru '92...they want $140 to $35 US. At least some idea anyway.

If you contact one of these places that list the axle by email...you MIGHT be able to get them to look it up and give you a definite answer...but I usually couldn't get them to answer email.

again thanks for the replys, i have looked on the websites, i have emailed about a couple of axle shafts, but i doubt ill hear anything over christmas if at all,
i have found someone breaking an ae86 corolla, iv asked for the chassis number so i can find the axle part number from toyota, hopfully its the same as my car so the half shaft wil fit :) if not, its back to the old google to try find a tercel or corolla being broken in the UK. then last hope is one being shipped over from one of the websites you have sent (thanks)

The rear axle on the 4wd corollas is not the same as the normal corolla nor the Tercel4wd, it is the similar to AE86 GTS collora (I think that has a different name as sold down under and in Europe, the Levine perhaps?) except the GTS corolla has rear disk brakes, a different rear end ratio, and a different bolt pattern on the hub. You Could swap out the whole rear axle and get the rear disk braakes, but you would need different front and rear wheel bolt patterns and you would need to swap in your Corolla 4.1:1 ring and pinion. The GTS also often had a factory optional LSD rear diff, an bonus if you can find one.

The left and right axle half shaft may be the same, check the part numbers. Or pull yours out and compare them, it just depends if the diff is centered on the axle or not, I think it is, or darn close. They are not too difficult to locate in the States, they recently had several in the local wrecking yard here, but the shipping cost would be high. I would guess somewhere in the $70-100 range USD, but the use part would not cost too much, perhaps $40. Do you know how much it weights?

I would not mind getting one for you if you can deal with the cost. But we would have to wait until another one shows up locally in the wrecking yards. Might be next week, might not be for 4 months or more. These were never very common around here either (unlike the Tecel4wd), but it sounds like more common than in the UK.

Good luck.

wikipedia has an interesting story to tell of this car. this was originally made from old corola parts that were leftover! This was such an accidental success it provoked the making of the Toyota All-trac! All-track was the American name, it was called diffrent things in other places. is a rare car in america. the production car used to compete in Rally races.

I have no idea if it will fit, (83-85 will interchange) if you had some to compare, axle in hand, count the splines, diameter, ect. both sides should be the same. one would think. perhaps it will match a pickup? who knows? stranger things have happened. (take your axle junkyard shopping)

Toyota axles all have the same basic design, length may be a question. perhaps you could find out how many use the same wheel berring? also.

read the wikipedia entery, interesting, I think you just enter toyota tercel
