Carburetor Repair Recommendation
Carburetor Repair Recommendation
I have a 1987 Tercel 4WD Wagon Automatic. The carb needs rebuilding according to the Certified Toyota mechanic but I'm not spending what the dealership wants. It has hesitation at low speeds. Can anyone recommend a shop that specializes in carb rebuilds? or is there another carb that would work better than the stock without a bunch of mods? What is the make of this stock carb? I couldn't find a marking. Thanks. Great site!

Re: Carburetor Repair Recommendation
There is a company that rebuild these carbs for about $200, I think it is National Carburator (search this list), you can also rebuild it yourself with a kit for about $30 from NAPA. And there is also the Weber carb conversion that is popular, also search this list for threads on the topic. The weber kit is about $400 new, or you can buy a used weber from ebay or other sourses and make your own adapter (not too hard). I would just rebuild the stock carb.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Here is a link to National, a very reasonable price:

Rebuilding those things takes the patience of Job and the skill of a watchmaker. imho, I'd buy a rebuild.

15340 is on most of themauxarcsjl wrote:Thanks for the info. I would rather rebuild the stock. What is the stock make and model? (normally)
even if its not that number the kit will probably work
the only difference i've seen between the different carbs is the primary jet size 101,102,103,106
the kit does not have anything to do with that
o'reilly's (aka shucks) has Walker kits for under 25.00
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

Re: Carburetor Repair Recommendation
I was happy with the National reman I received. The original National reman developed some probs after a year plus; National replaced it free, save for postage down to FL. It was a bummer the first one developed probs, but their lifetime warranty worked for me. If you can, get an extra AAP diaphragm - they don't last too long...

Re: Carburetor Repair Recommendation
I have rebuilt 100 toyota carbs on the side of the road! once in napa parking lot! You are making it way too hard, The diaphram on the side always goes bad, it's an accelerator pump of some kind, there is a hose, you can tell if you pinch it and it idles nicely. (gotta wait for it) this is the no1 problem with this carb. (gotta buy the kit for the diaphram though, any kit will do for the diaphram, they are all the same)
I use a bit (phillips head) and a 1/4 inch wrench to get at the screws, I don't even take the carb off to change it! if a diaphram is unavailabe, you can stick a BB in the hose. This stops the raw fuel from going into the vacum line.
This carb has a sight glass so you can see the float level, which is pretty nice. the 12mm bolts are for access to the jets, and bottom of the float bowl. You can stick the carb cleaner hose in there and spray the jets, thats how you get them out with the top off.
Sometimes you gotta "poke" the little hole for the accelerator pump, that is usually the problem with that.
don't mess with the adj. screws, or the float. you'll need to remove the plug for the mixture screw if you plan on driving to the mountains. And only mess with that if you have to. (continental divide?)
and that is about the size of it.
