MotherEarthNews has a plan for a waste oil heater based on an old cast iron frying pan as the burner...inside a regular sized stove box. Think it used a controlled drip to regulate the heat.

Is that UL approved? haha I think I will stick with the radiant heat I have now.

I am now producing a fair amount of crude though....

Back in the "Old Army," there were immersion heaters which were contraptions which were inserted into metal garbage cans to heat up water to boiling to sterilize mess kits before chow and then after when scraped of food residue. The things had big vertical stovepipes. They used this drip-feed method of feeding fuel from a couple-gallon tank on top.
THEY USED GASOLINE!
They put out a fearsome amount of heat - always was chary of them, though; I just knew they would blow up if I looked into the inferno below - which I did. Weird - you'd see GASOLINE dripping into this fire.
Wonder what is used now?

Gasoline scares the sh*t out of me ever since I messed around throwing it on a fire using a tin can. Not sure I'd want to be using that gas stove. The MNN stove used waste motor oil.

I'd like to find something for heat for the coming end of the world...but the only thing that "would be dependable would be wood...and you'd need your own woodlot."

Did I say "would/wood" too often? (nasally) Did I say that?

http://www.gr8gear.com/catalog/Military ... on-Heater/ Click on the little line drawing. This is the "new" (similar but multifuel-capable) version of the ones to which I was referring earlier.
In use, WWII/Korea/early VN type: http://www.olive-drab.com/od_soldiers_g ... s_gear.php Toward the bottom.

Just wonder how clean it would burn waste oil? Could be set up in a 55 G drum full of water and used for emergency heating. BTU rating isn't bad at 35K/btu.
