coolant leak from weep hole on water pump housing

Post by schmooot »

I've got coolant leaking from the weep hole underneath the water pump housing...just behind the pulley. Am I going to hae to replace the pump or will an new o-ring do the trick?

A leak from the air bleed hole is an early indication that the pump is on it's last legs, take it as an early warning system.
A/M and rebuilt pumps use substandard materials (plastic impellers) and only supply the front half.
The factory pump comes as a complete unit, you will need to order the o-ring on the back and I would highly recommend getting the feed tube to the T-stat housing with a couple of o-rings. Having everything new makes the job go so easy it isn't funny. Once done you can forget about for another 20 years.
I just did mine last year, the OEM pump is only about $100Cdn and all the other bits will add less than another $20.
For the record, I have tried a/m pump on my last turtle and tried to save the little pipe, the pitting didn't look THAT bad.
It was a lesson in futility and not one I would want to repeat.

Thanks, I'm going to the wrecker on saturday seeing as I snapped the end off the stabilizer bar, maybe I'll just pull a water pump while I'm there...the engine at the wrecker has fairly low miles. If I were keeping the car I would definitely go with a new one but I'm just trying to get it functional so I can sell it

Not all A/Ms are so cheaply made. I've had good luck with Beck Arnley on two cars, and they use metal impellers. But like you said, only the front half is what they provide. Fortunately I have not had housing issues.

And Schmoot, DON'T REUSE A WRECKING YARD PUMP! Every single pump I have ever had fail did so because I had drained the coolant and allowed it to sit.
