i just burned myself on this.
several years ago a guy with an '86 tercel picked up a replacement axel for his car
he knew i was always looking for parts so he told me the guy had a tranny for sale too
so i bought the tranny and was told it was an '87
so now years later i used the tranny to convert automatic to manual in an early '84 tercel
i pulled the rear differential 3.71 to 1 and replaced it with a 4 to 1
after many hours of work on this car i finally got to try it out today
everything worked fine till i put it in 4wd
i was on a gravel road and i could tell right away something was wrong
i could hear the rear tires slipping in the gravel
i jacked up the right side of the car
put it in 4wd
marked the tires and began to rotate and count
the rear tire rotated 10 times to the front tires 11
SOB
i had considered puling the front cover on the tranny and counting the teeth on the pinion just to make sure
but i had broke '83 tranny and it had 2 electric connections vs 3 on the so called '87 tranny
so i assumed it had to be a later tranny
i was wrong
i still have the other differential
so i can switch it out
Love those Tercell 4x4 wagons but they sure suffer from road noise.

If you think that's a biatch...I once was swapping out the trans on a VW bus...got the old one out and didn't mark it vs the new one...so I ended up putting the old one back in. Just a minor bummer.....
Give a boy a gun-give a biatch a cell phone-and pretty soon you almost got yourself a police state.
